General Cycling Discussion - new recumbent rider in my area...but he won't stop to talk!!!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Periodically I have been seeing this fellow on a recumbent and this is really something amazing since cyclists of any kind are few and far between on my roads, much less a guy on a bent!!! . I have passed him twice on my bike and then of all things yesterday he actually rode past my yard. Here's the thing: I have all kinds of questions I'm dying to ask, like where he's from, how far he rides, bike specs and handling and so on, but the guy wears a walkman and even when I KNOW he has seen me /heard me he never stops or even slows down. The most I've gotten is a 'howdy'. Even if I were out doing a time run I would take a second to stop and chat if I ran across another cyclist and they initiated a conversation.
Should I just chalk this fellow up as a snot and ignore him or keep trying to break the ice?
My husband says maybe my ripped up calves have him intimidated:D

Try to hop on your bent when you see him once, and catch up. I always like to talk to other bikers when I'm riding, and it is kind of hard to stop when you are in the "zone".
Good luck.

He probably suffers arro-recum-gance, bent-mentia or possibly recum-moronics. I've met guys like him and wished I hadn't. Many of them "look down their noses" at a regular bike. I think that once upon a time I met one that was a fairly OK guy, but I can't remember for sure.

I wish I could say your views renew my faith in the quest for human understanding, but I think the bar is quite a bit higher.
I can understand how psycholist might be put off by the unknown recumbent rider's lack of acknowledgement, but being a recumbent rider myself, I feel you've gotta cut that guy some slack. You have to be a bit of the individualist to even ride such an unconventional bike and then put up with the occasional rib/joke/ridicule from other bike riders for the effort (some develope a coarse skin over this.) And, of course, you don't need to be a recumbent rider to be plain rude, so is it fair to disparage all "alternative cyclists"? I guess we have to answer that query individually...

Well I don't have a bent, but they are intriguing and I do have questions about them . Most fellow bikers love shop talk, or so I always thought, so I guess I will just have to do a 180 next time I meet him and find this out for myself.
I understand "the zone". It's rather comparable to the phone ringing while you're having sex. Do you really want to answer it?
