Wow! I can get my fixie up to 29 mph, I can cruise on my road bike at 25 mph on the flats. But I went hiking today and  ! I gotta get out and hit the hills on my feet a little more. It felt like I had never exercised before. What diffrent types of cross training do any of you do?

Ellipticle trainer, push ups, sit ups and dog walks is about it for anything other than biking for me. Probably not exactly cross training. lol

I walk, bike, and lift.

Right now my lifting is simply using my own body weight. I thought biking was going to start out fairly easy because I was walking at 3-4 miles an hour with random inclines for 1.5 hours at a time. Was I ever wrong. Different muscle sets. I find that on the bike, since I am using muscles that must only be suited to a 5 year old girls frame, that I am going anaerobic at simple paces. That is with and without hills.

My squats and lunges will help eventually, but right now that is just leaving my legs tired for my rides.

I do 2000 meters in the pool twice a week and try and do a 5 mile hike with my 11 year old at least once a week. We are doing a 10 mile hike at elevation in 2 weeks. I started swimming when I reached a plateau in my weight loss program. It got me through that and I have stuck with it. I am pondering a sprint triathlon in October.

OK. Concentrate on upper body and core work then. Especially core to improve your balance. I used to wobble horribly as a beginner on any sort of long ride. But because I've worked on developing my core muscles, I completed a metric century today and was hardly less stable at the end as at the beginning.

No, that's what it is, and it's excellent.

I hike with my dogs, but I really need to focus on my upper body and core muscles.

Get some trekking poles, you get the hiking benefits and the upper body workout of Nordic Cross Country Skiing as well! One of these days, I'll post some pics from the Wabash Heritage Trail, doing the round trip of 30 miles hiking it in a day!:D

They are like collapsible Ski Poles. Walmart has 'em for about $10 a piece! They also work well doubling as tent poles for a tarp tent, by the waY!
