I'm still doing coach stuff a la carte and am contemplating a deeper commitment but I'm not exactly sure of my needs. What does a coach do for you? I've read a bunch of coaching sites and it seems like what I get at the entry level is what I already got doing things myself. I'm guessing the real value is outside their bullet points.

* Does having a coach keep you on your training plan?
* Does he or she point out things you've missed?
* Is it that they lighten your self-coaching load?
* Anything else?

Also it seems like $100 - $150/month is the going rate. Is this what you've seen?

give me roids.

j/k

the only coaching i've ever had was when the collegiate club coach subscribed weekly rides. i wouldn't have came up with the structure of it on my own, and they were often geared towards a specific end (recovery, base training, race prep etc.)

my coach created my training plan around power and alters it as needed depending on things like performance, progress and fatigue. Evalutates my power files after every workout.
communicates with me almost daily and sometimes multiple times a day to discuss the latest workout or the next work out.
He explains to me why and how things are happening.
Since he is a local guy he gives me the low down on all the races.
meets in person and works on my fit and technique.

basically he tells me what to do and i do it.
