Mountain Biking - Been holding out on you all. Some observations on the XTR rear deraillieur.

Been sporting an xtr deraillieur since Wednesday. What I have noticed so far is the shifting is much more crisp than xt, shifts quicker. There is no adjustment knob on the rear deraillieur, it relies on the limit screws and cable tension, which I feel makes adjusting it much easier.

Is that a KMC chain I see? How do you like it? I've been toying with getting one because of the mushroomed "bulls-eye" heads on the pins - I tend to pull apart chains laterally.

It's a Sram hollowpin chain. Right now the cogset is soaking in degreaser.

Even the 93 LX derailer that I am using has limit screws and cable tension. The barrel at the derailer or the shifter is still required to fine tune the cable tension. How is the cable tension fine tuned on this xtr?

You adjust the cable tension, like how you set the cable tension on a mechanical disc brake. Have yet to touch the barrel adjuster on the shifter even when I had the XT on it, which had the barrel adjuster. You basically get a cleaner, quicker shift without the barrel adjuster on the rear deraillieur, with out it, you set the side motion via cable tension.

Can I ask a semi related question here? Do the higher end dérailleurs hold more tension on the chain? My LX dérailleur allows the chain to really slap the crap out of my frame going down rough descents.

Wow:eek: that's an expensive derailleur. the XTR line is usually designed for the racers and weight weenies. Why did you choose this RD for your style of riding?

Carries more caché to tell someone you just demolished a $160 derailleur :D

Why did you choose this RD for your style of riding?

The way he rides, he requires the most advanced, toughest rear derailler available.



back on topic.my wife got me that derailler for x mas last year (suprise). I was initially going to bring it back to the LBS because I usually just run XT level parts, but so far this year it has performed well and the low normal spring is the way to go for XC. I was skeptical about low normal but I prefer it now over my other bike with SRAM.

Curious as to why you went with a long cage? You're running a single ring up front, so why no short cage?
