General Cycling Discussion - Shipping from Sandiego to Nashville
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm looking at a bike on Craigslist Sandiego, and need to find a way to get it to Nashville tn. Thinking about amtrak, but I don't know anything about shipping bikes. what needs to be done to the bike? I know the wheels will need to be removed, but what else?

Will you be the one packing the bike for shipment or will you need to depend on someone else? If you are depending on someone else, packaging/shipping companies like Mailboxes, Etc. boast that they can ship anything without damage. I am confident they charge what seems like a lot, too.
Do a Google search for "shipping a bike" and you will get some helpful hits, including this one (http://www.ehow.com/how_1627_pack-bike-ship.html). Get a copy of Todd Downs' Bicycle Maintenance & Repair (Rodale--current 5th edition) and see page 13 and following for detailed instructions on shipping a bike.
