Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Figure I'll split this off from the other thread. So the Plan is to leave from my house. Pending on the group size, everyone will have to park on the street near the entrence to my apt complex. Plan on doing the route I set up for the Stone Tour but we'll shave off about 9 miles. This ride is about 55 miles and 5k ft of climbing. Not sustain climbing, but some that are long enough to get the legs burning. Also give those a crack at "Mt Murder" as well. There are 5-6 major climbs, We'll regroup on the summit of each one so we're not too strung out.

Pace??? I'd like to try and keep it together on the flats/roller then everyone climb at their own pace on the climbs since we'll regroup at the top anyways.
I'll PM my address tomorrow to those interested.

see you say that...but my longest ride to date was yesterday...i have yet to do a century... i think i am strong for about 25-30 miles and then i kinda bonk...i commute about 28ish total miles a day about 3-5 days a week...i really need to start riding longer endurance rides...but i also need to start training for crits...

overall pace will prolly end up in the mid-upper teens, but the flats areas (not many of them) will be in the low 20 range which is fine for almost everyone with drafting involved. Climbs will be self paced, re group at the summit, downhills are self paced unless you're up front with me:D
Chucklehead

i wouldn't be too concerned about the pace. rides like these have the unspoken no-drop policy. and even if you do fall behind on climbs, there's always a regroup and the top.

Pencil me in as a maybe. It depends on what exactly my plans are for the rest of that day, and whether or not I get lost.

Where were you planning to cut down the miles?
jsigone
07-02-07, 04:03 PM
My house is 4.x miles each way to my work which is what I routed that slip for, so that shaves off the 9 miles or so and like 100 ft of climbing LOL
My commute is FLAT

I am going to bring along my buddy Ben...good guy, fun to ride with....and he can pull!! J could you pm me your house addy and i'll map quest it....you said 6-630 leave time right? I am not a for sure but about 80% right now.

I'll PM my addy tomorrow after noon. I'll let this soak another day for some takers. The weather WILL warm up, there is a store about the half way marker to refill on or top off, right off the 395 and 76. Most of the route is on back roads where there isn't much traffic nor stores. 2 bottles is recommended, no warmers are really needed, the fog will burn off into a hot day by 8am and the climbs will warm you up quick anyways.
Yah we'll depart about 6:30 unless someone gets lost;) Earlier the better on this type of ride.

Hey everybody, great ride today. It was awesome meeting Jason (Crash) his buddy Ben, who rides for Dewalt...would've been nice to know that before I agreed to the ride...dude can climb. efficiency (Mark) had some bad luck with flats, but every time I saw him, he was smiles and pain-free...dangit. Jason (Chucklehead) put in another 5K' today, bringing him to 15K' for the week, and Jeff (jsigone) wore his Campbells baked beans jersey. Dan (Indolent) is a fricken machine...just plops into a sustainable gear and goes forever.
Me? My guads cramped when I groped the hamer...
It was hot coming out of Lawrence Welk at the end. Sorry I didn't stick around, but had a family bbq happening, and I new I needed to do something to refuel beforehand so I wasn't completely useless.

Mark got another flat on the bottom of the Circle R dowhill. THe rest of 395 was hot and was on my cel phone talking to my Auntie while going up that last climb FUN!!!!!
Thanks to everyone that came out for this tough hilly ride, I'm gald we didn't have the heat during the entire ride. Fog on Gopher Canyon was nice to roll through. Ben is a climbing FREAK, I wish I was half as fast as him.

It was great meeting all you guys....definitally fun...
i don't know how it's possible but i know for a fact we climbed more than we descended..every corner we go around there is another hill:eek: ...it's a good thing i climb like spider man...:D
NOT!!!
Seriously though...good times...even climbing Samsonite (gosler, ganswer, golimer, copper, sopper, cosper) Canyon hill was nice:o ...hot though...i was so bonked i was actually getting cold chills climbing it..very odd? Looking forward to riding with ya'll again..sorry about all the flats...it was me throwing glass out behind me so we would have to stop!!!:)
ps...i am so deyhydrated...i am still drier than a popcorn fart!
Mark and Dan...sorry i couldn't hang to say good bye....trust me..if i want to do that again it was imperative that i left when i did!!
I was thinking next time we should limit Ben to the big ring?....or maybe set up some sort of brake drag!!:roflmao:

jeff, paul, mark, and dan, it was good to see all of you guys again. gotta do more of that!
nice meeting and talking with you and ben today, jason. in spite of how you may have felt, you did great with all of the climbing for someone who hasn't been on a bike all that long.
ben has got some serious talent, too!
mt. murder offered good returns today.

^Whoa. That's fast. I was at 48 mph max.
Great to meet Paul, Ben, and Jason (Crash). It was fun riding with you all. Jeff especially since he kept me rolling with the skewer, tube, and CO2 (thanks!). I have two new skewers of a different type on there now (I replaced front and back) since the type from today's incident now kind of freak me out.

Sounds like a fun/nasty ride.
What's Mt. Murder all about? Judging by Jason's max speed  , it must be pretty long/steep.

again, mark, i'm so glad that thing came apart on you before the ride started. with all of the fast descents today, that could have been really ugly.

actually not that long - just steep. not exactly thrilled to basically start the ride with a climb like that, but it does get you warmed up fast. still can't wait to try the climb you mention the other day.

That's right, Tracy. It's a very subdued bump in the road. I reckon it's about 10% for 3/4 mile, then about 8% for the last 1/2 mile. And, you start from a stop sign, so no rolling momentum at all. Jeff either puts it at the beginning or the end of his rides.
Jason, Who is that Max guy...he's pretty fast. ;)
Jason, Your twitching legs and hands were grade A, class 1 sandbaggery. You probably still commuted by bike to work this morning.

man, i think that hill got steeper. the previous time we did that it was 54mph coasting with a draft. yesterday i did 58.7, still coasting, but without a draft.

the replacement skewer would not fall apart in your hands;)
My legs were sore all day yesturday and this morning on my route when climbing the thre flights of stairs mulitple times. The ride kicked my butt, doesn't help that I was off the bike for the past few weeks then organize this ride:o
Anyways I'll be doing that route more often, anyone have the total distance and ride time?

I think I had about 59 miles total, but I backtracked Cloutster Canyon a ways, and did that 95% grade for 1/8 mile.

I have pics of you going up that I need to upload. I'm surprised you had that much energy left in the legs to do that after going up the canyon twice. The 2nd time prolly warmed up your legs again I sure.

Doing that was a HUGE mistake. Climbing the 395 from Lawrence Welk, my quads cramped so bad. Every time I wanted to stand, they'd lock up completely. I ended up crawling up the hill in my 34/27. When I got to the top, Jason was waiting. I said, "I cant' stop 'cause I'm cramping up." and we rolled down Jesmond Dene.
Y'all asked why I turned around on that dumb climb, and it was because the LA was flowing. In about 5 pedal strokes, I went from "Hey, this feels pretty good and I'm close to the top." to "Oh, Sweet Jesus, I gotta turn around before I roll backwards."
