I'm going to do this ride this weekend. I think it's about a 100miles each way. Has anyone done this before? Does anyone have a good route to take? Thanks in advance!

Pete

I never rode it but I've driven the area. I would head north to Deer Lake State Park and ride along the lakeshore on the Truck Trail. It can get pretty rough in spots, but the Superior shore is amazing,

I've done St. Ignace to Tahquamenon Falls, and then on down M28, towards Wisconsin and points beyond. But I've never been to Grand Marais.

If you're looking for the most scenic route possible, I'd take highway 2 west, turn north at 117, go east at M28, north at 123 and take a left at four mile corner. Then go north on 407 until you hit the deer park truck trail. Take that west to the Grand Marais truck trail, which goes all the way to Grand Marais. Google maps claims that route is seven miles longer than the most direct route, which would have you go west at M28 and north on 77. The later route might be preferable, as it avoids all truck trails, which might not be very good for riding on with road tires. But the former route would be good if you don't mind a bumpy ride and you want a good view of Lake Superior over the last leg of the ride.

The third option would be to take 123 northwest out of St. Ignace to M28 west. But it wouldn't be any more direct, and you wouldn't get to ride along Lake Huron at all.

Eastern end of M28 has narrow shoulders and heavy truck traffic.

Good camping in Trout Lake, about 30 miles out of St Ignace, Newberry, and Muskellunge SP up on the shore are also nice camping areas, and the road conditions are reasonable. I would carry Bear Spray, it served me well up in the wilderness areas when I rode across from Paradise to Marquette along the Lake Superior shoreline. I did the Fire Roads and trails though and got into some pretty remote areas.

You did that on a bicycle?? I did it a long, long time ago with some friends on dirt bikes (motorcycles). Even with those, it was a tough ride since so many of the trails were deep sand. Seems like it would be really tough on a bicycle! In our case, I think we just went as far as Munising before heading south and then looping back to Paradise.

Better yet, I did it on a skinny tire (32mm) road touring bike, aired down to 80 PSI instead of 100-105!:D

The bear spray was used in a Wolf encounter, by the way! It seems I was on the menu for the evening meal!:D
