We lost a bright star over the weekend. Please read her story. If you're racing, remember the centerline rule.

Sounds like a bright positive young lady. So sorry for her family and friends loss. I hope the safety issue there is handled in time for the next race. I could not imagine a race finish being held on a busy narrow road. Sounds like a recipe for disaster just waiting.

That's awful. My prayers go out to her family and friends, team mates, and those around her during the crash. That's got to be rough (and talk about an understatement)...

Having done the race last year, I can tell you that it was not really a safety hazard. Just about as rural as you can get, hardly any traffic. Sure, there was a vehicle from time to time, but the roads are not that bad, and the race finish was closed to traffic. Much bigger, faster races had no problems.

That was the Illinois State RR, by the way. Kind of put a damper on the weekend.

That is horrible. Thoughts and prayers to her, her family, friends, team mates, and racing community.

Closing roads just isnt going to happen for a road race. However, officials AND promoters of road races really need to make sure the S/F area is clear of all vehicular traffic during a race finish. Based on the links I read that were attached to the post, officials and the promoter share some blame for Beth's accident. Tragic.

I read one link to a news story about it from the blog site and I believe the report said the accident was 3 miles from the finish. If this is true then the officials and promoters did not do anything wrong, IMHO. I don't want to turn this post into an argument on who's fault, but according to the one story I read, which could be incorrect, the accident wasn't near the S/F area.

It's so sad to hear of tragedies like this. I could never fathom how her friends and family feel being confronted with such a loss.

I may have read the article incorrectly and if so, apologize for my rant.

Race and ride safely everyone.

This is terrible - did the race on sunday and there was kind of a heaviness there.

It is interesting that NBC 5 here in Chicago did a major story on it at 6pm and is doing another one at 10pm - they are advertising in between even and they reported live from the meeting that the xXx team is holding tonight about her.

Correct. The accident was no where near the finishing straight, according to the many people on my team who were there. Which happens to be a mile+ long, and completely closed to traffic if my mind serves me.

The course is as safe as it could have been. It was on country roads, with pretty clean corners and generally decent to good surfaces. There was a rolling road closure, but apparently the young lady who lost her life got chopped or swerved into by riders in front of her, forcing her over the yellow line in some fashion. I can't imagine how terrible the other people involved must feel. Please include them in your prayers too, if you are of that set of beliefs.
