A big hello to everybody here at BF.

Just stumbled across these forums earlier this week while looking for a good community for road/mtb.

I'm 20 years old, born and raised in Tucson, AZ, and attending school in Flagstaff. This means I'm in Tucson for the toasty summer months, and Flag for the freezing winter (It's all backwards eh?).
I've been casually riding bikes for over ten years, but haven't taken a serious interest until this past year. Bikes I've owned in the past have been cheap mountain bikes (< $100), not intended for any real trail riding. So last December (06) I decided to buy a new mountain bike, and ended up going with a Specialized Rockhopper, which I decided would be a good entry level bike for myself. In January of this year, a friend convinced me to compete in our first triathlon together. I agreed, and eventually bought a used road bike to prepare. I found a '98 Cannondale Saeco for $250 on Craigslist, which is certainly no stallion, but a good bike for me to start out with (with relatively nice, Ultegra, components).

I put a lot more miles on my mountain bike, but I'll be riding the Tour de Tucson this fall so I'm looking to start preparing for that.

Otherwise, I'm into hiking, running, Halo2, and programming (Java/Python). I'm studying Electrical Engineering and currently working at a small semiconductor diagnostic facility for the summer.

I'm hoping to learn a lot from these forums, in terms of training exercises (and possibly proper eating habits as well, if that kind of thing is on here), bike maintenance, part selection, and a better general understanding of my bicycle. All in good company, of course.

Hello _Enzyme, yes, there is a Nutrition forum in here, and a Training forum also.

Check out the regional forums, and take a look at some of the more recent introductions--there's another member from Tucson who just joined up too :) .

Welcome to BF!

Which distance are you planning to ride in the El Tour?
Best get to logging lotsa miles. The Greater AZ Bicycling Ass'n (GABA) does rides about 3 days a week year 'round. You can pick up a GABA Update at most bike shops in town or check out their website (believe it's GABA.org).
Also when back at NAU do lotsa riding, the higher altitude of Flag will stand you in the good when you do the tour in November. Ride the big loop at Sunset Crater a few times to get your legs in shape!
Enjoy that C'dale!

I'll be doing the 80 mile. I think this is a realistic goal to work for. I'm real excited.

I take it you've done it before? Pretty fun?

welcome. i grew up in tucson and went to college at the UofA. I did the tour last year for the first time and had a blast. it was awesome riding 110 miles and never stopping for traffic (they block traffic for you)!

General forum question: What are the signature guidelines? Are images allowed? If so, what size? Thanks.

Enzyme:
Ridden it 23 times (missed one year 'cause boss would not let me off work), and my wife has done it about 15 times on a tandem with me.
The 80 miler has the least participants, so no big hassle at the start. Expecting 10,000 riders total this year as it is the 25th anniversary of El Tour.
Yes, it's fun if you are in shape for it! So go out there and ride at 5:30 tomorrow morning!

Signatures are fine, and welcome. Don't know about image sizes being allowed in signatures--nothing too big though, as they tend to be a bit overwhelming. You can ask in the Forums Suggestions way down at the bottom of the main page.
