The results of tonight's ride...
http://web.mac.com/mjdehart/iWeb/Site/Photos%201_files/blowout.jpg

But, thanks to advice picked up here, I knew that I could limp home by wrapping the tube in a wrapper. It lasted just long enough got get home on two wheels.

I guess it's time for a new tire (this one only had about 20 miles on it). I even checked the pressure before leaving tonight (I usually keep them at about 100lbs of pressure) :(

Any recommendations on a pump as I had a hard time getting clyde supporting air pressure in the tube (presta valve).

Thanks

Mike

That sucks...sorry. :(

I use a Joe Blow floor pump (lifetime warranty)....never had an issue putting 110 psi in my touring bike.

I should have been more specific, I need to get a new pump to carry along.... Thanks for the response though!

Road Morph pump, from Two Peak.

It gets hard to pump at high pressure but IIRC, they can run up to 160PSI

Just checked out the the road morph and it looks pretty good. I like the small hose and foot support. The problem I had was holding the tube connection end steady when pumping (it kept coming loose). I think I'll have to get one of those.

Thanks Tom!

did you hit something or did it blow out?

Yeah, no kidding, HOW did that happen? ESPECIALLY after only 20 miles!!!

WHat is the name of that tire so I can put it on my "Do not buy" list.

It was a michelin. I've had many of their tires without many problems. I hit a rock with a glancing blow trying to avoid some glass. Can't really blame the tire (too much). Probably pinched it pretty hard (not that my body mass put any extra stress on it  )

+1 Topeak Road Morph. Gets my tires up to 120psi in no time.

I'd still complain. A tread blowout from a rock I can accept, A SIDEWALL blowout form a rock is not acceptable.

Your indignation is unfounded. Sidewalls are the thinnest part of the tire and while issues like the OP described do happen they aren't that common.
