Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm going to try to escape the heat and the holiday crowd tomorrow by setting out early. If anyone want to join me, I'll be going through Malaga Cove Plaza around 5:30am (or as soon as its light enough to navigate the roads).
My planned route/climbs will be:
• Via del Monte - Altamira - Highridge - Crest
• PV East - Crest (repeats)
• Hawthorne - Crest - Highridge
• Zumaya - Castillo - Coronel
I'll keep going until it gets too hot to ride; or if holiday traffic clogs the descents.

There's something wrong with you, 5:30 am on a holiday?
(I may be out that early, too, getting in some extra riding before VB's ride)

When you poor saps are wilting in the heat with sweat dripping onto your top tube, you'll be thinking, "Gee why didn't I take up Happytime's offer and take a cool, refreshing morning ride along the bluffs?!" :D

I'm gonna try and knock one out early but 5:30 is pushin it.
When you poor saps are wilting in the heat with sweat dripping onto your top tube, you'll be thinking, "Gee why didn't I take up Happytime's offer and take a cool, refreshing morning ride along the bluffs?!" :D Kris and I are riding SART at 5:30am, I agree you with it is GREAT time to ride. You have the road to yourself, there is no heat and when your finished riding you have the whole day to yourself. If PV was not so far we would join you.
Yikes!- it would be the return up Hawthorne that would be the end of me, I think.
I did PVE a couple of times and San Pedro over the weekend, so am going out at the crack of 7:30 and just do an easy one tomorrow.
Have fun though!!
BTW- check out the Pt. Fermin loop sometime- when you come back down the switchbacks, take a left and go all the way down to Gaffey Street. Take a right, up a pretty steep hill to Angels Gate Park (Korean Friendship Bell)> down to Point Fermin> back along the bluffs, staying on Paseo del Mar, then right on Anchovy back up to 25th Street. Nasty little climb, pretty much like Ganado- you'll like it!

'Thing is... you could start at 7:30am and still pass me.
No sandbagging here – he's done it before! :p

Ahhh... a convert like myself! It is awesome, isn't it?! The other morning at dawn I rode from Manhattan Beach to MDR and only encountered one jogger and one other cyclist. I felt like I owned the whole darn beach.

7:30 is borderline. 8am is better. Eh, 8:30 so I have some wiggle room. Now is it stil considered passing you, if you're already finished with the ride?

You've been spending to much time with those RAAM types and forgotten how slow I am. No way I'll be done by 8:30. Pass away!

You late-risers don't know what you're missing. I left home around 5am and had the hill to myself for hours! Temps were cool, crisp and not a car in sight.
But sometime during my three PVE/Crest repeats, my saddle slipped back and I wasn't aware of it because the pain came on so gradually. Climbing back up Hawthorne Blvd, the mashed-roadkill-that-was-once-Happytime's-privates were on fire. Lee, who called and said he overslept, finally showed up on the hill at 9am  all fresh and sweet smelling, while I was half-dead and cursing the girly bits. He showed me his magic tool that adjusted the painful object between my legs, and I was good to go for at least a few more rounds. Then we had meat and rice.
Oh, and I was flagged down by a driver who turned out to be Dubbayoo (Steve). He recognized the BF jersey as I was coming down Highridge and introduced himself. Glad to meet a fellow BFers!:D
Sorry to hear about your saddle issues. I'm nonetheless rather jealous that you got to get out there and have the hills to yourself. I overslept and didn't ride before work this morning.

LOL. sounds like one of those late night movies on Skinemax channel.

I was just pulling out of my apt when you passed by. I live in Highridge apts. Something told me I was going to bump into a BF'er today. :)
I put on a 12-27 cassette last night which I will need until I drop the weight I've gained this year. Man, it is depressing pedaling that 34x27 and feeling like that bike wasn't moving forward at all. I needed it though.

Steve, this is your only pass. From now on, if you want to be with Joy, you have to RIDE with Joy, not just show up in your car...geeesssshhh

the possibilities are endless....
Note to self: I really should bring along my tool kit rather than just leave it at home. Just in case...
Note to Joy: You climb a lot. You're nuts. I look forward to seeing you at Breathless Agony next year.
