what do the numbers "5" and "0" have to do with police.

Because Hawaii is the 50th state admitted to the union...if it were set in Alaska, I suppose it would be Alaska Four Nine....:D .

Nothing to do with police. Five-0 stands for the 50th state. That would be Hawaii....
