Why didn't anyone mention this before I agreed to go on Jeff's oven-baked sufferfest?

cuz it's too flat :roflmao: :roflmao:Not really. From the route profile, there's 10.8Kinch of climbing over 50 miles!

I DID mention it in the long-ass thread while Jeff was discussing options....

I thought you like hill challenges;)

I do. It just sounds like it may be miserably hot. Wimpy hills and fully stocked rest stops are strangely appealing under such circumstances. ;)

As is a beer garden at the end :)
My only complaint is the ride heads out to the coast early, then comes inland and finishes coming back via Escondido and Poway after it heats up.

I thought it was going to be hotter up here today, but it's a few degrees cooler then yesturday. The wind is moving the air around so that is good and it's not a santa ana wind either. I think the hottest part of the ride will be on Couser Canyon where it's in a small valley blocked from the winds.

When you see a litespeed Arenberg, a Holland and a 1975 Raleigh Pro riding together, come by and say hey.

Look for a tall guy on a black Cervelo Soloist. Unfortunately will likely be too hot to think about wearing the all black BF jersey...probably go sleeveless instead

I'll most likely be doing this ride as well. Matte silver C'dale; and I'll be huffing and puffing even on flats. I didn't pre-reg, so I'll be there early. :)

Wuss. Come to Jeff's ride. If I have to sweat and melt why shouldn't you?

I'm preparing for your Slacker's Century! Aid station every 15 miles for the first 2 legs, followed by every 10 miles for the last 2. This is going to be an eating/drinking fest more than riding. :D
Also, I'll need to ride a little faster first before doing Jeff's ride. :o You all have fun!

It starts at 7am, so figure finishing around 10am, shouldn't be too hot by then. Man, I'm torn... Which one to do with absolutely almost no miles this year. This one looks way more tempting, maybe just bandit ride it and skip the stops. Wherever you guys see the funny bike, that's where I'll be. Mid 20's out towards the coast if anyone wants a draft. What's the climbing on the suffer fest?

5k ft in 55 miles, 6 major climbs, 6+ downhills, not many flats sections in between. All fun stuff:D
Please call me if you bail out of my ride, so we're not waiting for more riders. Don't worry I'll be up well before you will.

Bah, should've gotten up earlier. :) I bandit rode the old pro route. 2:53 35k feet of climbing, and I'm hurting. 16.74mph average, I need to loose weight.

Just came back from the ride. It was fun!
Bumped into markg at the end; almost didn't recognized him since he brought his other bike instead of the soloist. I think I also bumped into a few BF people, but I'm not certain. Midway through El Camino Real, I heard someone yelling what I think may be "Psydotek". By the time I looked back, the lady's voice disappeared, so I couldn't really find out who she is (we are at a red light and there are a few different group of riders).
Anyways, this has been a ride I've dreamed of riding when I started to bike mid-May last year. At the time, I bonked after 15mins on a "beginner's mtb trail" and also struggled to ride with the SDBC C- group (26 miles). This ride just happens to be the first "long distance" organized ride I heard of, and finishing 50 miles was a dream at the time... and now I made it! Yeah! :D
As for the ride itself, I started of late :p, and didn't pre-reg. By the time I started (7:15am), I think I was the last for the 50 miles route. I also took the 20 miles route slip just in case I couldn't finish it in time, but that turns out to be unnecessary. I tried playing catch-up riding at a fast-to-me clip of around 20-25mph. Early on, I was a little worried since I didn't see any bikes on the path. By the time I reach near El Camino Real though, I started to see more riders and that was quite a relieve, since I don't think I am able to continue the faster pace anymore. Bumped into a group of tri people (a guess based on their bikes), and rode with them for almost the rest of the ride.
Weather has been very nice as well. Cool and the sun is not too bad. Only drank one bottle of water by the 2nd rest stop, and midway thru my second when I cross the finish line. The Grand Tour DM helped me reduce my reliance on rest stops, so I was able to stop just for the 30 miles one and finally at 50 miles.
Total distance is just over 50 miles, but that's car-to-car. The actual route is less than 49 miles.
Overall, it's great! :D

You lost 4 lbs with the new Aero :)

Must have been someone else because I rode my Soloist, and don't remeber bumping into any BF people except for markw on El Camino Real.
The weather was great!! The first half of the ride was in coastal fog. The main problem was keeping constantly clearing the water from my sunglasses (which i needed to keep on because I'm now wearing contacts). I pushed pretty hard on the first half of the ride because I wanted some separation from some of the sketchier people in the pack. Picked up a nice freight train on San Dieguito Rd, then settled into my own pace going up Del Dios. Flew down Via Rancho Parkway. Pomerado is NOT one of my favorite roads. Seems like every time you get into a good rhythm, you'd get stopped by a light. The big hill back into Scripps Ranch kind of kicked my butt because I haven't done much hill work since suffering my groin injury. Forgot to start my Garmin until we were on Mira Mesa Blvd, but what I did record was 2:45 and 17.3 average. Had a couple free beers in the beer garden, and had a slice of pizza before heading home to deal with a leaking toilet :(
Q: why did I CONSTANTLY see people carrying camelbacks and other types of packs on a fully supported 50 mile ride where the aid stations are no more than 15 mi apart?
I bandit rode, and didn't use any of the support. When you saw me, I probably had 3/4's of a bladder, and same on substained energy. :) I'm still trying to picture you without the bike gear, nice meeting you out on course, we were probably close at the finish, but I went straight back to the car and went home. I did two stops, one for a strap that was rubbing the back tire, and the other for a cramp. Other than that, I felt good. Now I need to shed that 40lbs. The first 20 miles was a blast, slightest downhill, easy to keep 30 give or take. :) I think I would've been dying had I gone up north, definately need to work on climbing. Bike was overgeared with 700's and a 30/27 low. I can't stand, so I've got a really good spin.

I was in a freight train on San Dieguito Rd and you went flying past!! But then I saw you pulled over a ways up the road.
I really shouldn't stand, and felt overgeared on my bike with a 34/23 low. But as I said, I have not done much climbing either since getting hurt back in April.
I originally met you probably 10 years ago at a few of the KPLUG meetings, but I was probably 60-70 pounds heavier and had a beard. I was kind of active on the mailing list for quite a while but dropped away, even though I still do a lot of Linux stuff.
Yeah, my quick fix the strap stop. Didn't realize it was rubbing on the tire. New brainbox on the bike that straps to the seat so it doesn't get jarred over a bump. I was at 35 all the way to San Dieguto. That bike coasts forever and gets some good speed going downhill. I didn't stop again until a leg cramp on pomerado.

I just heard a biker was died on this ride. (See page two of the local section of the UT on 7\5\07). Apparently he hit another bike, went down, and perished. I remember passing a crash while traveling under an overpass. It looked serious but I didin't see any blood, and just kept going. There was a big crowd around the downed biker. Let's be careful out there!

Did they find out the cause of death yet? I heard that the guy may have had a medical condition like a cardiac event which caused his crash/death.
