I'm guessing the Mt. Vernon trail is going to be packed on the 4th, and any attempt to ride to/from the fireworks will end in woe.
Anybody have personal exprience?

Never tried riding the MVT on the 4th. I've watched the fireworks from the Iwo Jima monument and that was pretty crowded.
I have ridden the MTV the morning of the 5th. Watched the NPS employees cleaning up the mountain of trash.
Maybe ride in as close as you can, lock up and walk the rest.
Or try one of the local fireworks. Fairfax City puts on a good show, and I've seen people bike there.
I did that many years ago and its not too bad. It depends what time you go. Capital Hill Bikes have bike storage rakes downtown if you go all the way to town. Getting home would be the bother in the dark if I can remember.
Any update on this? Stories?

I rode back from Rosslyn into DC after the fireworks last year and there were people everywhere (go figure ;)). While it was still light outside, we were looking out from my friend's 12th floor condo and could see people all along the MVT waterfront.
Just don't be in a rush, and don't complain if you have to walk your bike for a while. I got blinded a few times by super-bright bike lights on the unlit path that goes between Iwo and the Memorial Bridge.
