I was looking thru some photo albums when I stumbled onto this one. 1994 was the year I first discovered that there was something better than a Target Huffy. Someone turned me onto the SART and suggested a hybrid. This was my first 1/2 decent bike, a cromo Miyata hybrid. My first organized ride Rosarito/Ensenada. Shortly after I picked up a Target helmet and started doing organized rides like the MS 150 from Rancho to Palmsprings!:D

From softball and pumpin' IRON to cycling. Been 13 years of nonstop cycling!

Tennis shoes, straps, no helmet, and earphones! WHATTA DORK!:D

Got any pics of yourself from long ago?:o

I'll have to borrow some pics from my mom of my junior racing days. I know they're around, as I showed them to my wife recently to prove that my neighbors had a reason to call me the kid with no @$$ (I have quite a hereditary @$$ nowadays)

I made it a year later 1987, this time with a route sheet and I did it again the next year. Then quit riding after my bike was stolen. :( I've always wanted to do it again. I can't believe it's been twenty years!

Jimmy, I had to come up with something. I was recording myself singing and playing my guitar. I viewed the recording then said to myself, "OMG, you suck, you better go back to the bike forum"!:D...Maybe the guitar was inspiration for the new topic!:p

1974. We had ambitions of riding across the US and this was the start of our first "big" ride - Half Moon Bay to LA.

I was 14 (on the right) with my cycling buddy, Tom. My mom made the jersey (neither she or I had ever seen one outside of a magazine). The tights were a pair of long underwear my mom dyed black. I'm next to my first identifiable "real" road bike (i.e. it hadn't been spray-can painted by the previous owner, or found in a dumpster like my previous bike). A Frejus. I loved that bike.

I was the "racer", though I had never been in or seen a bike race and didn't have much more with me than a space blanket (remember those?), a knife, a jar of mustard, and an extra pair of socks. Tom was a "tourer" and had a sleeping bag. We slept in an artichoke field the first night and tried to rent a camp site in trailer park near San Louis Obispo the second, but the park refused us because they didn't know what to do with a couple of 14 year olds on bikes. We headed down to the beach where we huddled out of the freezing puring rain under the awning of a closed hot dog stand. Shivering with nothing other than my extra pair of socks on my hands for warmth, we were picked up (rescued?) by the police who called our parents with a "do you know where your son is?" and the honest "not really" answer. After sorting out that we were not run aways, they released us on our way at 6am after we got 2 hours or so of sleep in the police station.

Neither of our parents, it turned out, really grasped that were were actually going to ride our bikes "all the way" to LA. Both thought were were just all talk and would be back in the afternoon. Ha!
