Hi Everybody-
I'm thinking of getting a new road bike for new terrain (rolling hills, some long straight flats)
Anybody have suggestions for a bike -
say around $1000?
Thanks!

Trek, Specialized, Giant, Bianchi, Raleigh, Fuji, Cannondale, and a few others all make bikes in that price range. I really like the new Raleigh's. They are nicely equipped bikes for the money. Alot of the guys here like the Fujis because of the steel frames. The Specialized Allez is a nice bike. The Giant OCR's are a nice compact frame, if you like that. Bianchi's are always sweet. The Trek 2000 is in your range. Oh, and I forgot Lemond. Their low end bikes would be close. I would run a search for your question. It is discussed here alot. Go sit on a few bikes, and find one that is comfortable to you. Good luck. :)

Welcome to the forums!
well in that range, there are a lot of bikes to choose from.. Here's a tip, get one with at least a shimano 105 group..
But most importantly, it must fit you.. You can have yourself fitted, Bike shops can help you choose a bike that fits your body type..
Fuji, K2, Cannondale, Trek, Giant, Specialized makes great bikes..

Given the wide variety of makes, chose your bike shop first.
The components are virtually the same from manufacturer to manufacturer, and the frame materials at any given price level are more thanadequate in comparison to competing materials, so the most important thing is fit. You are not likely to get a good fit without a good bike shop, but, unfortunately, a bike shop being local is far from a guaranty that they know how to fit you. Find a local riding club and ask the seasoned members what shops in the area do a good job of fitting.

Thanks for all the great advice - I really did come to the right place.
I guess the uphot is to get fitted for a bike - and you need a bike shop that knows what they are doing for that.
I'll start looking right away.
Thanks again!

I just got an Allez sport, 29 speed, full tigra and a 105 rear derailer, carbon fork and seatpost!!! i got one a couple of months ago and love it!!! it also will not break the bank at just over $800 so thats $200 for new pedals, shoes, etc.
I guess I'm a little bias since i have one, but they are great!

I'm curious: how does that 29 speed break down? Is it a double with a 14.5 cog cassette, or a triple with a 9.667 cog rear??

By the way...
has anybody ever heard of a make of bike called MIKADO?
...think its made in Quebec...
I did a lot of researching the past few months for a road bike also. Rode most of the "known" frames (Trek, Cannondale, etc). I finally settled on a new '02 Fuji Team. Alum frame and full Ultegra gruppo. Most of the other components are Ritchey. This bike far exceeds (price and performance) any of the other bikes in the same class I tested. Not to mention 16.8lbs. The frame feels like steel, without the weight. Paid $850.00
