I give it high marks for the high weight capacity it seems to have.
I could lug 20-30 lbs of cargo to the backrest and pedal/control with no problems.
The comfort rating and ride duration is right on the money.
However, uphill speed and general flatland coasting is a bit disappointing.
I have this 12% hill/dip with a dirt road near my stepdads place.
It felt like a biotche and a half trying to control and move that thing up that particular hill, but then again the road was quite rough up and down.
And the roadie dropping me while I was bottoming out at 22mph on the Auburn, WA bikepath could be attributed to the wheel diameter. I feel in quite good shape and have easily kept up with roadies on my Montague folder.
Nonetheless, it fullfills my minimal requirements as a general "carry-all" bike.
Not for racing, not for riding onto curbs, sidewalks, etc. like a tank.
Just for strict commuting with a heavy load attached and relaxation during the daily journey.

Although I've only ridden one briefly a couple of times I'd echo your thoughts about the EZ-1. A very good bike for the money. IMHO probably one of the best entry level ones out there.

North Dakota a good place to ride??
Anyway, yes. It's strictly a beginner for now.
I figured I would get my time in with this one before I decide to invest in any further-on advancements.
