I really love the solid feel of the friction action These are the XC shifters. The clamp seems like it would work if I just used a hardware store bolt and some washers. Would this be safe? I don't want to use a flatbar.

I mount thumbshifters next to my brake lever with the shifter pointing "up" so to speak. Clamps on no problem and is pretty easy to shift. Better than mounting it on the flat part of the bar IMO.
Pic is not real good but it may give you the idea. You can see the band of the shifter under the brake lever though the shifter itself is obscured.

Is that a single-hand rig? I see a Suntour Barcon + thumbshifter + single brake lever with a BMX brake line splitter running to both front and back brakes.

^^^Yes it is. A motorcycle accident took away most of the use of my left arm and hand a number of years ago. The thumb shifter I was talking about in the post runs the RD, the Barcon runs the FD, and the brakes are indeed joined together so that one lever pulls both. I have a modern bike set up very similarly. The Ergo right hand does the RD as it is meant to. It also pulls both brakes the same way as in the picture above. I went a little more upscale with the FD and used a Kelly Take-off. It works well.
