Why on some stages do the riders not wear a helmet? Sometimes a hat or no headgear at all. Stupid if you ask me.

Too hot. At least that is the popular reason.

I agree it is just plain dumb to take that risk. But I guess if you think your head is worth nothing then put nothing on it. :D ;)

I heard that if the ride was under a certain distance, not sure what it is now, helments were not required.

I haven't seen any of this. Can't they get fined/kicked out for doing that?

I thought they had to wear it all the time, exept on a final climb of a mountaintop finish (that is atleast 5km long or something like that). And on a final climb, I don't see the point of wearing one (without a decent of course).

The Tour is under UCI rules and the Pro's are not required to wear helmets. With USCF rules everyone has to wear a helmet. I think.

Article 5 -Helmet

During the Tour de France, the rigid security
helmet is compulsory. The riders participa-ting
in the Tour de France can at their own
risks withdraw their helmet during the last
climb of the summit-finish-stages, at the fol-lowing
conditions:
1) The climb is at least 5km-long;
2) The helmet cannot be withdrawn before
the climb.

So yes, they have to wear them.

And here's the link to the rules: http://www.letour.fr/2003/docs/reglement2003_full_fr_us.pdf

The UCI made helmets mandatory in 2003 for all classes.

Helmets are required in all races, except on mountaintop finishes. A rider can toss off his helmet when he's finishing on a mountain.

Several years ago, the stages in Belgium required riders to wear helmets, since Belgian law says all cyclists must do so. However, French law didn't require them, and many riders simply discarded them at the French border.
