Where could someone go if they needed to upgrade parts on a bike and wanted to know what (Shimano, truativ, etc) can be used with what? Just curious. I bought a new XTR front der and I am being told by my LBS that I need to also upgrade my crankset to XTR, is this true. Need help from you experts out there..Thanks

That doesn't really fell like it jives in my head. You should be able to run any front deraileur unless there is something very different about it

a) does this deraileur attach to the bottom bracket. That might affect it
b) Did you also switch to an XTR bottom bracket, if so then yes you will have to switch to an octalink crank. This seems to make the most sense

Unless there is something really different about XTR front deraileurs that I don't know about. If this is true it is just another reason for me not to even think of getting the new xtr :)

Your LBS is just trying to sell you a new crankset. If your derraileur is e-type, you will need a new bottom bracket. However you can use your exisiting one as long as you space it correctly
