I am (still) tinkering with an old road bike and have a question. The front derailleur is worn pretty well where the chain was apparently slapping the side. It's nowhere near the point of breaking, but should it be replaced anyway?

If it matters, it's a Shimano Thunderbird.

Wouldn't think so. Nearly every derailleur has rub marks or small gouges on the inside of the cage plates. Unless you feel that it is worn so thin it might break soon, don't worry about it. Just try to keep it adjusted after you finish tinkering with it. This will cut down on any rubbing that might have been occurring while riding due to poor adjustment.
