Southern California - A Tale of Two Canyons Black Canyon/Box Canyon

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Black Canyon and Box Canyon adjoin each other in the Simi Hills. I rode through Simi Valley to Black Canyon. Took it up and over (turns into Woolsey Canyon going to Chatsworth). Then I headed to Box Canyon and took that back to Simi Valley.

Here is the map of the canyon area

Here is the elevation chart. So, Black Canyon looks a little taller, big deal. But I can tell you it is much more difficult to climb.

Here is the grade chart. Here it is quite easy to see why I struggle so much on Black Canyon. Note the dip in the first climb (Black Canyon) just means the grade went down to 5%. Believe me, it felt flat and provided an opportunity to catch my breath (not enough of a break, argh). Box Canyon felt like a recovery climb.

I wished I lived a little closer to these as it provides excellent climbing training. For you mountain goats who live in Simi or the northwest SFV, I encourage you to give it a try.

Been riding Box Canyon since I was 12 years old on an old Sears 3-speed.
Black Canyon is just a longer meaner Fargo st.
Kudos to you man.

Ahhh those were the days, I remember riding to the beach over Topanga when I was about 10 on my Sting Ray. I didn't even know about Box Canyon until I hit High School and all the hippy parties were there. Box would have been way too steep for me and the Schwinn

Did you attend El Camino by chance? I graduated there in 1974.
