Yeah, for real - especially when they have parents from the 'old country'. I once met this beautiful FINE Chinese young woman who worked at this restaurant called the 'Pu Pu Hot Pot'.. She would always come into this place next door where I worked and order a cup of tea and just sit there and smile at me. She was fresh off the boat and hardly spoke any english - but she was so very fine that I went out and bought myself a book w/tape on mandarian chinese. I gave her my number and she'd call me and we'd talk for hours sometimes - but we didn't talk about anything specific really because my chinese was much worse than her english - which was still pretty bad. Eventually she stopped calling, and she also stopped working as a hostess at the Pu PU Hot Pot - so I decided one day to call her (I had her number from caller ID). When I called, her mom picked up and I asked to speak to 'May' - and she told me straight up that I had the wrong number because ''this is chinese household'' - I was like, no **** - of course it's a 'Chinese Household' ??.. but she hung up before I could say anything. There's more to this story, but it never worked out.. so what's the point.

The Asian attitude varies a lot by country. Filipinos seem to almost prefer that their children marry Americans. My wife's parents were never a problem (beyond occasionally needing my wife to send money to some family member), and were both very nice people who made no effort whatsoever to meddle in our affairs (may they rest in peace). I'm struggling to think of another Asian country where this attitude is so prevalent though. Possibly Thais and Vietnamese aren't quite so hostile to interracial relationships as a rule.

Most of the people that looked at me as "the bad one" were not born here. They are still in the customs of where they came from.

For me I felt they meant it as an insult. They didn't think I understood what they were saying in Chinese. Even though I only understand the Chinese I picked up from others, I understood. And it wasn't nice.

But I'm American. And if anything, that seems to get to them the most.
