Just got back from a road trip to Oregon from Orange County, CA. Besides some wonderful bonding time I left with their Santana Tandem campy with Phil Wood hubs, Raleigh Professional mostly campy, Masi Grand Criterium all campy, spare set of Campy record/mavic wheels, and a bag full of spare Campy parts. The kicker? The roadie snobs at the table next to mine in Solvang, audibly bashing the bikes on the roof, because the folks put racks and fenders on them for touring. The lowly swine...

I thought it was a parody at first, overhearing them repeatedly boast how fast they were, just like something from the Styleman column in Bicycling. But the ignorance, could you really think someone would throw a Thule rack system with Side Arms/Sportworks on a car just for beater bikes? I rolled it over in my head for a couple of hours until I could laugh about it. I really wanted to grab these kiddies (all older than me) by the earlobes, march them over to my ride and clearly point out the Campagnolo dropouts, and other choice bits. But some people just can't appreciate a classic.

If you can't recognize a Masi I don't think you can call yourself a road biker...

They sound as if they would also bash my Rodriguez--full Campy, and equipped for touring, because that's what the first owner did for fun.

A respectfull guess, but actually they're 78, still enjoy biking and ride their custom Eisentrout's (sp?) Grandpa is just one of those fellas that knows what he likes and sticks with it. Only uses wood/Mavic or Campy/Mavic wheels. Only campy toe clips, and Brooks saddles. Anyone know if I could put dual-pivot brakes on these before I do a full tear down? Campy of course.

The roadies sound stupidly ignorant! I would recommend trying the original brakesets with Kool Stop pads before you go to dual pivot brakes. The braking might be acceptable. If you go to a more modern brakeset, you will likely need to use the bolt from the old front brakeset to avoid having to drill the fork to accept the newer (recessed) bolt arrangement.

This was tossed back and forth, take the pickup and throw everything in the bed or the Corolla and ship the tandem. We went with the later.

You should have told the roadies that real cyclists (especially those of us in the Pacific NW) ride in the rain. Only desert bikes should be set up without fenders and mudflaps.

Probably the best time I've had with the old guy was figuring out how we were going to pack up the Santana for shipping and going through his parts stash. He also passed along his vinyl/foam helmet (think Breaking Away) the he wore in a crash and Eddy Merckx training manual.
