Classic & Vintage - 80s Marinoni: would you pay $500 CDN?

So far my search has included scouring craigslist, this old guy's garage (he also asked me to be his painter's model; i laughed sociably), and this weekend for garage sales. it will happen.

Actually just re-reading, and does that mean it only has 6 gears?

means it has a 6 speed freewheel, the bike is 12 speeds. I have set the meeting with him for tomorrow and was the first to respond, he has promised me the bike. I desperately want this bike. Consider it sold. Don't even think about trying to steal it from me!:D I talked to him on the phone for a while. I wanted to pick it up tonight but he was busy. I can see the brakes are monoplaners. I am quessing it will be a mixed bag of campy as he seemed a little unsure. The frame is a 1981 according to the serial number he gave me, which gives with the decal. I am absolutely stoked. tomorrow will be torture especially since the components could be anything.... crossing fingers for as much 1st gen c-record as possible. I'm also crossing my fingers that he is somehow a little off on the size as he said the previous owner was about 6'2". a 58cm would be a touch small, hoping it is at least 59c-c.

So to answer your question, I can/will and am going to pay $500 in a heartbeat.

It's rather fitting that it is a 1981 (year I was born) and will be the mate to my '81 pista. I might even switch back over to a period Super Record, who knows! I'm always so nervous even when a seller says you get first crack at it, because they could always sell it out from under you (happened to me before).

I didn't see the super.... so are you gonna post pics?

He just took my Columbia SuperX Turbo Mtn. bike with mag wheels as a trade. Gave me a tank of gas to.

Hey lets see that 95 special! I have a '92 which was built for a guy of my exact height and I mean exact. I asked how tall he was and got "6 foot 3 and a half" and I was like.. you have to be kidding... you are my height! Anyway he raced it so it is really really beat up with lots of sloppy touch up but no dents... I have a centaur group on it which is gradually getting beat up... But I have to tell myself if you are gonna ride it it's gonna get beat up, just ride and enjoy it.... This bike I am getting today however, should it actually have C-record will be on display and ridden with painful caution.

Edit: As far as I know, campagnolo didn't make stems and he is likely just mistaken and it is a cinelli.

The owner is a chiropractor, I have to wait till get gets home from work. It is in West Vancouver. Which, if you know Vancouver, is the western area of the North Shore or North Vancouver.

Oh, the suspense is killing me. It's almost time for me to go to bed, too...:( .

How much riding do you do currently? Do I know you? If not we should do some riding. I live in central Van. Yeah the other marinoni has STI ultegra.. it should be a GREAT rider and the price is good. Actually the price is great of 8 speed ultegra, brifter and all. You will enjoy riding that one much more.

I am a Marinoni lover, some people collect MASI, I collect Marinoni... well I have 3 and one must go in order to make room for this one. This one is a 1981 frame and I will do just about anything for early Marinoni frames with the maple leaf cut outs... But they are all nice!!! The Purple one is probably mid 90s and a really nice rider... lugged steel probably and still a hand built Giuseppe bike! Go for it before it's gone too!

Awesome. This will be a racing bike, so keep that in mind. No racks no fender! well you can use those strap on ones with the rubber thingies... Test ride it, make sure you are comfortable. Flip it over, make sure there are no dents or crack... look behind the headtube and make sure the paint isn't cracked (sign of front end impact)... make sure everything is in good shape. feel the braking surface on the rims to make sure it isn't concave (worn out).. all the regular stuff. Take someone with you who knows bikes if you can... sunday is a long way off I hope the seller doesn't sell it out from under you... it's really a good deal if everything is in good shape. If the parts look clean and have few scratches the miles are probably low.


you probably won't see me out on my soon to be new marinoni (knock on wood) unless you are riding on a fine sunday in the summer and I'll be taken it easy... This really is a bike that should be preserved and not used a daily rider IMHO. I just finished up rigging one of those quick release mount thingies for truck beds and that to my back rack on my touring bike... I tested it around the neighbourhood and it worked great. Can't wait to use it to bring the bike home.

No racks, no fenders is totally fine with me. Those clip-on fenders if anything. I was also thinking kevlar tires for fewer punctures? I'll feel it out. Thanks for the tips; I'm on a beautiful learning curve.

Has matching full chrous group with the exception of the pedal which are ancient look. Cinelli XA stem with giro bars. and concor max saddle not rolls but I love the concor max so it's all good. awesome NISI mixer clinchers, pretty narrow though. decision time.. put the group on the faggin? I know it would be more period than the super record on it now.... find a new frame? ride it with a longer stem and just enjoy on sunny days?

You and I have a lot in common. Every time I pick up another frame or bike, it initiates the domino effect. Every bike in the stable gets rethought to find the best combinations. Some stuff gets changed but most not, but everything gets thought out. Fun but currently tough as I've picked up 2 bikes and 1 frame in the past month.

Congratulations on the purchase. Turns out I had the wrong Vancouver. ;)

it sounds beautiful but you keep it .. i'm better off with something put together.

i put on a long seatpost and a 130mm cinelli stem with 65-44 criterium bars, the fit ain't bad but the drop it larger than I am used to. I'm gonna go out and do a Category 1 or 2 grade climb this afternoon and really get to know the group and bike

Set up for me, yeah it's on the small side... all ready fishing for interest in the component group.

What kind of bar tape is that? I'm squinting at the screen, and can't decide whether it's tweed, faux snakeskin, or something else entirely. Looks pretty cool, though.

I think it is faux snake skin... it almost seems like leather but then I don't know... Either way it's pretty cool but a bit too short.

First Ride. Of course it rides amazing and the small frame sprinted like the thoroughbred race horse it is. did roughly 55km round trip and climbed a 12km or so route up one of our local mountains. I don't know what the gain was but I'm going to guess the summit was around 3000 feet give or take a few hundred. Bike climbed like a champion and descended like a bullet. Just awesome.

Its gorgeous! I really love the Fleur de lys pantos over the Ms or the maple leafs. Wish mine had em!
