I'm not well versed when it comes to French bikes, so if I'm asking a dumb question, chalk it up to a newbie to Mafacs and Peugeots. I picked up this Peugeot frame a while back to obtain the Mafac Racer brakes for a UO-8 I own. When I went to remove the Mafac brakes, I found the rear brake is mounted with a vertical bolt instead of horizontal. Are all Mafac Racer's mounted that way or is it just this particular Peugeot that used this style?
BTW, I've decided to not remove the Weinmann brakes currently on the UO-8.

Most Mafacs I have seen use the usual orientation for attachment. This one is fairly rare.

I agree with evwxxx. The rear Mafac brake mounting on my '71 Paramount is similar to the Weinmann on my '72.

I have only ever seen the vertical Mafac Racer mount on a UO-8. My girlfriend's PX-10 has the standard horizontal mount, as do all other bikes that came with Racer brakes...

Only the models that originally had fenders have that type of rear brake mount. Somebody was desperately seeking that little adapter here not long ago. You need the standard Mafac rear brake bolt. I'll check my junk drawer when I get home from work.

My Paris Sport uses them as well, and luckily I found a pair on fleabay. The mounting bracket is fixed, so you can't really modify a normal set.

I guess I can't help you then. Any Mafac parts that I have would be for Comptitions, not Racers.

It shouldn't be hard to find A Mafac Racer for parts. They must have made a bazillion of them.

Are you sure those "Racer" brakes in the pictures are made by Mafac? Could they be knockoffs? They don't look like any Mafac Racers I've ever seen.

Those are actually CLB brakes. MAFAC copies.

Yes. mine are actually CLB's. I wouldn't say they are Mafac copies, since CLB has been around since the 50's. From what I see they are much sturdier and more rigid than the Mafacs I have had. The metal quality also appears to be much better, with less pitting and none of the "pot metal" feel.

I take that back, after looking at the "Racer" logo on the CLB boxes. It is an exact copy of the Mafac logo, with the A extended under the other letters.

First, thanks for all the comments/information.
I don't think these brakes are copies. The only way they're a copy is if CLB was under license to use the Mafac logo. The brakes clearly say MAFAC "RACER" across the top. With the underline extending from the "A" under the "FAC". If you look hard, you can make out a portion of the logo in two of the pictures.

A comment was made about the bike having fenders originally. I think that's correct. Once I found a link to several Peugeot catalogs. It showed a model around 73 or 74 (I think) that looked identical to the frame above, but it had fenders. The rear rack was absolutely identical to the one in the picture. Note there is a tab on the left seat stay. I think that might be for a generator. But now I can't find the link.

Thanks for the offer dirtdrop, but, as was pointed out, these brakes can't be modified. Still, its appreciated.

I meant the brakes in the pic that Eyeseeu posted. Yours are definitely Mafac.

Apparently, I was writing my post at the same time as Eyeseeu. So maybe CLB did have license to use the Mafac logo.
Edit: Maybe I should stop posting:D . Thanks Noahscape.

Those brakes can be modified. Like I said before we got sidetracked by those CLB pictures, all you need is a standard Mafac rear brake bolt. I can see in the picture that your Racers use the same bolt as my Competitions. I'll see if I have one when I get home.

I agree with dirtdrop. If you look at mine, the mounting bracket is part of the brake caliper. Yours looks like it is a separate piece with a bolt holding it to the brakes.
If you do switch it out and don't use the the back piece anymore let me know, I would love to buy it from you.

I do have the bolt you need and you can have it if you PM me your address. I don't have the washers or nut. That frame is more rare than a common UO-8. Are you sure you wan't to strip it?

Pretty sure thats a UE-8 Frame, I have a later UE I'm restoring, a '78 or '79. I'd love to run across a early 70's one like yours, It would match my early 70's white UO-8!

I flipped a Peugeot awhile back with the same issue. I ended up modifying a rear reflector bracket to bolt on to the chainstay and then the brakes bolted on to the bracket. Not completely beautiful, but quite functional.
