Here's a chance for all you fast descenders to get some twisty, turvy, fun downhill mileage. Granted, every hill you go down, you must first climb, but what the hey?!
Route:
Start at Westfield North County Fair behind Macaroni Grill. Just off the I-15 at Via Rancho Parkway
South on the Northbound side of I-15 (a bike path separated by concrete barriers...is quite safe)
Pomerado Rd. East to Highland Valley.
Highland Valley to the 67 in Ramona
67 Southwest to Archie Moore, back to Highland Valley
Highland Valley to Bandy Canyon, descend into glorious dairy farm country.
Bandy Canyon to the 78
78 East up the grade to Ramona all the way to the AM/PM for a rest stop (around 35 miles)
Back down the 78 West to Bandy Canyon
Bandy Canyon to Highland Valley
Descend Highland Valley to Pomerado Rd.
Hop on the I-15 North back to the cars.
About 56 miles...with...I don't know...let's call it 4500' of descending. If anybody wants to routeslip it or Bikely it for me to determine elevation, here's the Toporoute map I made of it. (http://www.toporoute.com/cgi-bin/getSavedRoute.cgi?routeKey=CFNVWLKNBQAODOA)
Meet at 6, and Roll at 6:30. Unless a vocal majority wants to make it later.

By "glorious dairy country" do you mean "stinky manure road"?

Yep...but only for about 1/2 mile of flat...keep your mouth closed. I once ingested a horsefly that (most likely) grew to it's gargantuan Mothra-like proportions by feasting on cow crap.

Ick. I'm sure there's some Disneyesque "Circle of Life" reference in there somewhere :p

Such an optimist, rating the ride by the amount of descening instead of climbing, dairy country instead of Bandini Mountain. I need to learn from you.

I cannot take credit. I learned from Jschen when he described a Palomar South and East grade sufferfest as 10,000' of descending. <---that looks so much better.

Where's the Macaroni Grill in relation to Sears?
Macaroni Grill...if you are on the South I-15, and you get off on Via Rancho Parkway, make a Right on Via Rancho (heading East). Take your First Left at the signal, which is the mall's main entrance. Mac Grill will be on your immediate left.
If you took the main entrance, and made a left to go up to Sears, you'd pass Mac Grill on your left.
Coming from North I-15, Exit Via Rancho and go straight at the light into the mall parking lot, Mac Grill is on your immedate left.
Jeff...what's a better time? I've got no problem doing it later, but as weather.com says, it's going to be 91 in Ramona on Sunday (but only 85 in Escondido...so call it 89 avg.).

question, though. is 78 up to ramona really a good road to ride?
Mo'Phat
07-05-07, 04:28 PM
I was surprised, actually. I went up a few Saturdays ago. It's in fine shape, and there's a reasonable shoulder. I'm not quite sure what to compare it to, but the Ranchos and NCCC groups go up thattaway all the time.
I'd say it's probably most comparable to Poway Rd up to the 67...but not as steep, and less traffic.
On Chunder Canyon road, I felt a hell of a lot more nervous, and we were only passed by about 4 cars the whole way. That was a tight road.

ps. The route could be altered to go up the 78 to Ramona, then go up Highland Valley road...getting up the 78 before 8 a.m.
pps. This was a spur-of-the-moment plan for me...if you and Frank want to ride, do about the same amount of mileage, leave at the same time, etc. I'm up for suggestions on routes.
Chucklehead
07-05-07, 04:33 PM
no suggestions here as i don't really know the area that well. it sounds fine to me. i was just wondering about that portion of 78 because of how i drive when i'm out there.

I guess it's just the three of us...+1, if you include 'imaginary Chucklehead'. This post is to let you two off the hook if there's a more 'social' ride in which you want to participate.
Otherwise, I'll be at the mall at 6...staring hopefully at the entrance for any sign of comraderie...

My original plan for the weekend was to do the pie ride route solo so this is more social.
Are we going to go more than 2 hours without a water stop?

Sorry we'll miss you Mark.
Frank: I guess that all depends on how fast we ride! There's the AM/PM where the 78 and the 67 meet in Ramona, and depending on whether we do the 78 climb first or the Highland Valley Road climb first, that stop will be either 20 miles or 40 miles into the ride.
There is another 'general store' just West of where Bandy Canyon Road and the 78 merge...maybe 1/8 of a mile...and although I've never stopped there, I'm pretty sure there's water, sodas, etc.
From the Highland Valley/67 intersection in Ramona, it's only two or three miles into Ramona proper to find a store...or we could just go back to that AM/PM.
I'll google map for parks and things that might have water on this route as well.

40 miles on 2 bottles first thing in the morning should be OK. I'll bring a 3rd bottle so whatever you decide is fine with me.

No pics, but that's okay. We almost got killed though. All three of us. It was awesome.
I hate Jason because he'd just start pulling away and I couldn't keep up, and I hate Frank because when we got to the top of hills, I'd be dumping sweat out of my helmet, and he'd hardly be 'glistening'. (I don't know...couldn't think of another word)
Thanks guys for doing this ride. The company made it much more enjoyable, and I got a better workout than I would have if I'd gone solo.

Ramona is not the sort of place where three guys in spandex snap pics of each other. A better way to spend your Sunday there is to drive over to the Turkey Inn, have a few Buds and then take the pickup out to play chicken with those sissy boys on their bicycles.

Lemme ask ya: does the type of T-Shirt make a difference? I wouldn't think that my Tucson Sausage Deli T-Shirt would suck up as much as your Foghat, Live in '76 shirt would...
Hmm...Korn sucks pretty bad...maybe I should rip up a Korn shirt.
Know what else sucks? Guys in old Ford F-150's who think it's A-OK to come right at us, crossing over the yellow line while honking their horn.
Interestingly, I looked back at the two people riding with me, and decided I could safely yell, "*****hole!!!" and dude would probably keep on driving. If I was solo, I might have just mimed "*****hole"...and hoped Hicky Van Hickster couldn't translate.
And ME, you've seen my ass...it's no bigger :) and no smaller :( than ever.

There was traffic, but honestly it was no worse than the many times I've done Lake Wohlford. I've done Palomar and been more tense.
Really, any road where there's a California Shoulder (white line on the edge of the asphalt) you're going to get all kinds of drivers.
Crowbear Canyon (sic) was a really tight road, with narrow lanes.
