Which way are you going? North to Barry or South to the River Market?

I ride the bus into work from Downtown to the Boardwalk Shops at I-29 and Barry Rd. The 129 leaves every 1/2 hour at rush hour from 10th and Main and goes directly north. I have ridden south all the way quite a few times, but it is uphill going north, so I haven't done that yet...

There are a couple ways you can go. Depending on where you're at on Barry (I know the western route), I have taken Prairie View south to 64th St East down to Waukomis Road, then right on Waukomis to Vivion, turn Right, then turn left at the Corner Cafe in Riverside - going by the Red X - then 9 highway for a mile or two into North Kansas City and across the Heart of America bridge.

You can also take Green Hills from Barry which turns into Waukomis.

If you're on the Eastern side of Barry, North Oak has HUGE hills, so I've not tried that way.

The 142 bus also goes that way but it takes forever to get from downtown to Barry Road.

Thanks, Mike. I'm going in both directions and my destination on Barry Rd is that I29 section you mentioned, so your directions will be useful.

If you're going North, I would go Waukomis to 64th, as the road past there is pretty steep and little or no shoulder, but 64th and Prairie View are ok for riding on. Southbound Green Hills/Waukomis is pretty fun once you get past a single huge hill just south of Barry Road.

I find the google maps pedometer really helpful to map out routes.

Here is the route that has Prairie View on it, just zoom out a bit and scroll south for the route.

Good luck.

It'll be fun to discover how you define "steep" and "huge" by riding these routes.
