Road Cycling - Triple Bypass Tomorrow

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
It's finally here! I've been looking forward to this ride for some time now. Anyone else in here planning on riding it? I could only find one guy to ride it with me (my CTS coach and friend..hopefully he'll be able to keep up ;)). My longtime riding partner and friend decided against riding this one :(
I'll be rockin' my black Cannondale, USPS Jersey, and have # 2051 on my bike. If you see me out there, give me a wave :)

How did you do? Did you survive? Looks like a major ride. 120 miles and 10,000 feet of climb is not bad. If you survived this come out to California next July and do the one I did yesterday...129 miles, 16,000 feet of climb over five passes!!!! They don't call it "The Death Ride" for nothing.... It was my first time doing it and I have never seen so many individuals suffering in the same place in my life. Here is the link for that ride:

Well, we survived...really not too bad of a ride except for Vail Pass at the end. Being the least tall of the 3 passes we thought it would have been a breeze, but after all that climbing prior to, we found ourselves slowing a bit (that darn head wind wasn't helping matters, either). I started to tighten up a bit, but a short stop and some good stretching got me right back into the swing of things. We ended up riding the route in 6:59:30 - keeping a 17 mph/avg pace and HRavg of 156 bpm. The goal was to ride under 7 hours...just made it by the skin of our teeth.
btw - i saw a guy on the way up Juniper Pass sportin' one of those "Death Ride" jerseys....I remember looking at it thinking, "oh yeah...gotta get me one of those" :) That seems like it would really be a challenge!!!
Holy crap, when I clicked on this thread I thought someone was getting a heart surgery tomorrow……

DJP I am gonna be there this long weekend, wanna hook up for a ride, maybe some mountain as well?
PeterG - I'm always down to ride with new people, but unfortunately I leave for DC on business for a week this saturday morning - no riding for me this weekend (and nothing like a week on the stationary bike in the hotel "workout room") :-(
If you are in Colorado Springs, though, there is a group ride that leaves on Saturday and Sunday from the Starbucks on Tejon and Bijou (downtown) @ 10 AM. Everyone meets right on the corner in front and then usually splits soon after 10.
Typically (sometimes the route changes), the Saturday ride is a pretty fast-pace ride out east and then down south to the raceway - roundtrip is around 52 miles. This ride is only really "tough" if the wind is blowing.
The Sunday ride is usually a climb-fest up north and through the air force academy - which is friggin' AWESOME if you can get on!!! long winding road...huge climbs...wide shoulders...almost no traffic lights...and people actually drive the speed limit! The terror alert has led to the academy being closed to anyone without a military id...but there is usually someone in the ride that gets us on.
Most of the guys/ladies on the ride are cool as fans...and there are many different skill levels present - from CAT1 racers in town training at altitude to us loley CAT5 souls :) There may be a few "Fabio's" in the mix, but that comes with the territory.
And if you're craving some mtn bike action...definitely hit Cheyenne Canyon / Gold Camp / Columbine Trail / Buckhorn / Cap'n Jacks / Section 16...any of the LBS' should be able to point you in the right direction to get there. You can hit all of those in a nice long ride...lot's of climbing, but the descents are well worth the effort!
have fun!

I miss Colorado Springs. I spent many a day in Subway, across the street from Starbucks. :P Wonderful view of the peak from downtown too.
I have shared a few of my HR graphs before and thought this would be another good one to share.
I finally downloaded the info from my HRM from the Triple Bypass Ride from a few weeks ago...
