I'm pretty close to wrapping the bars on my Voyageur, but I don't really know how to not get a gap in the wrap where the housing splits off. I'm planning to reuse the original spring housings, yet one is a few inches shorter? Is there a right and left, and is the short one too short now because some cut it? Thanks for any tips. I think I asked this once before but didn't really get any responses that I remember?,,,,BD

I run mine all the way under the bar tape. I know it's not the old school way, but I think with new SIS housing it's fine, works for me anyway. My World Sport I used the original clear/wound steel housing and it also works fine. I guess that really doesn't answer your questions at all though does it

Well, kind of, since I'm considering ditching the spring housing, as cool as it may be. I'm thinking red
housings, as silver would seem a little bland, and the decals are red anyway. I'm curious what it looks like completely wrapped under the tape. I think the old school way looks kind of cool, but I'm interested in seeing yours at least?,,,,BD

For wrap I chose the Cinelli woven pattern stuff in black. Should look sweet.

I believe that way is just as "old school" as the ugly way where it comes off the bottom of the drop. Either is acceptable. I prefer the full wrap method.

I bring mine out about 5 turns of tape from the ends of the bars and loop the cables over my period-correct cylindrical Bellwether handlebar bag.

I'm not sure if you can tell very well from this picture, but on this bike I brought them out from under the inside of the brake hoods and it worked out well. I taped the cable to the brake and it stays where I put it and doesn't interfere with my grip.

This particular frame is pretty big and I did have to pick up a tandem brake cable for the rear as the OE Dura-Ace was inches short.

Here's a pic of my World Sport with barcons and aero brake levers, both with the clear wound steel housing. I haven't had a problem with the RD cable being too short, although I will say with the Trek I put together yesterday I didn't have to trim it.

Okay I got it now! Thanks for the pics. I think I may do it that way, although this build will be pretty old school. I'm even using a Schwinn Approved square generator light set. It's the one that looks kind of like a fishtail in back, and has a squarish headlight. I don't think the generator works though, unfortunately.,,,,BD

The original stainless housings can chafe the paint on your headtube. I'm not going to put them back on my PX10 when I get the frame back from Dr. Deltron. I'm hoping the shifting will feel less vague with SIS housings.

A short piece of clear surgical tubing will fix that. It's practically invisible, and non-abraisive.

Well, I imagine they might wear on chrome after a while too, hehe. I will buy some new red housings and do the whole bike in it. Black, red, and chrome should look great!,,,,BD

I'd be surprised; especially if it's a Union dynamo. There's precious little to go wrong with those things. I've had a bunch of them and only one ever gave up the ghost. If you can't get it working, PM me; I've got a couple extras laying around.

There is a product that is a thick, clear tape to protect your paint from cable rub. I think it's called frame saver. I have it on my Trek and you can't even see it.

It's a Soubitez, and I believe it has a special mounting. I could be mistaken though. I'm going to try cleaning all the wire contacts, but it has never worked, not even on the
78 Continental it came on. I figured it was more fitting for them to be on a touring bike.,,,,,BD

Interesting. There's a product that you spray on the inside of steel bike tubes to inhibit rust that has the same name.

I know. When I went to the LBS and asked for frame saver (the spray) they thought I meant the tape.

Edit: Ok, I looked it up. The LBS guys thought it was called frame saver. This looks like the right stuff. It's called Bonk cable rub patches.

That's about what it will look like, except for barcons and that carbon looking Cinelli tape in black. I started out just cleaning this bike up, and now it's going to be a nice custom. I'm also considering dropping another
$75 for a B-17. The broken in one I just got a month ago, went on the 12.2. Maybe I will swap them, a broken in Brooks on a fresh rebuild will be the icing on the cake;),,,,BD

Are those Mikes Voyageur decals?? Man I need a set of those like yesterday!!

I just got back from it's maiden voyageur ;) and I'm grinning ear to ear :D :D :D . You see, I thought it was going to be too big for me, but after taking photos I dropped the seat and let me tell you it's the sweetest riding bike in my stable. It's even a little better than the 23" black 11.8 in my sig. I guess I have short legs because my upper body really likes the longer top tube.

I'm keeping it and barcons will be going on it tomorrow! Yeehaaa! :D

PM me. I'll sell you the extra set of decals I got from Mike for what I paid for them ($60). I don't need them now that I'm keeping this one.

Well, lets see the whole bike! I just did a slight test fit on it, and with the seat all the way down I should be able to fit on it just about right. The standover is a bit tight, but hey I never stand over them anyway, hehe. I'm also thinking of working a couple of extra days, so I can afford a set of Honjos for it.,,,,BD

So I'm still confused though about how the wrapping goes? Do you have to install the barcon and cable first, then trap the end of the wrap under the next consecutive pass around the bar? Or do you wrap the bar with extra cable sticking out, and then trim the housing & tuck the wrap while intalling the barcon. Another way?,,,,BD

Okay, guess I'm set to go. The only thing holding me up now is the BB, and the downtube decal. Well, that and the rusted cable guide/stops. Not to mention every time I go outside, thunder starts in the distance. We've had rain almost every day in the last two weeks.,,,,BD

At least I got the seat post, saddle, and rear derailleur rebuilt and installed before the wind kicked up.

Hey, a stroke of luck for once! I couldn't find ANY red shifter housing today. The red brake housing I bought was in prepacked sets with cables. Guess who had 60 inches of lined red friction housing left after finishing the RD piece, and all three pieces for the brakes. That leaves way more than enough for running the barcons the "normal" way, and possibly enough to run them up near the stem. If it's not enough to run them through the wrap, then the split off type is fine with me. It's friction anyway, so I didn't really need any fancy linear stuff.,,,,BD

Well here's what I have so far. The housings look kind of busy, and I'm seriously contemplating going off the drops to clean it up. Looks messy without aero levers, that must be what's bugging me?,,,,BD

Maybe a sparkplug wire loom would help? You know, one of those chrome Y shaped things with the rubber grommets? LOL!:D

BD, Looks great. Not too busy at all. Personally, I like the look of barend cables coming out from under the tape at the stem. When I rewrap my Paramount bars I'll do it this way. There seems to be no difference in function between the Paramount's shifting and the Traveler's shifting (which has the cables routed to the stem). Can't wait to see the bike with wheels on the pavement.

Alright, I'll leave it alone until I can ride it a while. One thing I do not like is the ridge around the inside of the brake hoods, caused by the cable housing. Have you ever used Cinelli brand bar tape? Man they're getting cheap or something. I had to unwrap and redo each side two or three times to make the tape reach the top?? It's not just the housing either that's causing the shortage. Nine times out of ten I wrap a bit tightly make the tape thicker. Even then I always had some left on other brands. No way on the Cinelli. It had to be 3/4" wide or nothing wraps, IE: barely overlapping, and it was just long enough. I think I'm back to my cheap wrap, at least they give you enough;).

The decals should be here in the next couple of days, then I have to find some brake shoes I can live with. Hopefully I can find some grey Kool stops, the guy who had them on ebay seems to have run out.,,,,BD

Looking good. I went to aeros to clean up my Bianchi when I swapped to red housing. I like it better, but I don't know if I like how much it "updated" the look. Just doesn't look like my old Bianchi anymore :( It's gonna look alot newer once the new tires come (not gumwalls like my current set).

Red and Black (and/or chrome) looks great.

Aero brake levers are something I never really liked, until I got the Raleigh Olympian. Since then I've been
wanting to put them on all my bikes. It just loooks so much cleaner, and makes the riding more enjoyable to me. Certain icons like an 11.8 should stay somewhat old school in my opinion.

So, what do you guys think of the headlight? It's definitely period correct as it came off of a 78 Continental I bought a couple of years ago. I've done everything but crack open the generator trying to get it to work however. If I can make another brand of generator work with the rear bracket, then I'll keep it. As cool as the setup looks, I really can't justify the weight of leaving it on just for the looks alone.,,,,BD

I have a add on question to the OP....I have a set of barcons (new in box) that I will put on in a few weeks. they came with nice cables/housings. Does any one know if the typical Shimano housings are long enough to to do the tucked under the wrap, come out with the brake cable thing???? (I am of the cable comes out of the barcon is ugly camp :) )

thanks

Not sure, mine came on the bike? It had the old school spring housing, and one was cut shorter than it should be. Sorry I can't be of much help. I can tell you that 30 inches was just about the perfect length for each housing. This is a 25 inch frame, but the randonneur bars have a bit smaller drop than most bars, so it probably evened out. I would say about 30 inches for each piece give or take.,,,,BD

Sorry I thought I answered this already. It's plastic and the chrome isn't as bad as it could be. Most of the haze polished off. The decals came today, Thanks Dave!! All the decals were included:
2 top tube decals
2 downtube plus wet rim warning decal
Schwinn Approved seatpost decal
4130 cromoly
Schwinn Xtra Lite
2 seatpost bands
and for black 11.8s - the fork, seatstay, and chainstay bands.
