Northern California - The Stay Cool ride - Sunday July 8th?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Since it's getting warm lately, I thought I would extend an invitation to NorCal forum-ites for a ride along the cool coast this Sunday.

There's a nice 50+ mile, (approx. 3000 ft elevation) loop from Half Moon Bay to Pescadero, up Pescadero Creek Rd to Hwy 84, down to San Gregorio and back to HMB. Ocean views, rolling farmland and redwoods trees all in one ride. Lattes and scones at a coffee shop afterwards.

This will be a mellow, no drops, social ride. If you want more climbing for extra credit, I can provide side-routes that would get you back to the starting location.

I propose starting at 9am at the HMB fire station, corner of Main Street and Purissima Rd.

Anyone interested?

Unfortunately, I'm will be out of town this weekend. However, remember that wind along the coast is generally north-to-south so heading down Hwy 1 is a lot of fun, but going back up often is not. I always take the inland route heading north to avoid the wind and get a change of scenery. Try Stage, Verde, and Purisima on the way back. The inland route has a few rolling hills, but nothing tough.

Sounds like a great/fun ride. But I will be in the sun picking up trash for the SF Sheriff dept. But I hope to meet all of you on the 22nd.

We'll only be northbound on Hwy1 for about 7 miles between San Gregorio and HMB.

Sorry, I missed where you said you were going over Haskins Hill. You probably know that the upper part of that hill can get warm on a sunny day. Sunday doesn't look too bad, though.

Man!! I'd love to go but it's "family" day for me. Plus I have a softball game that evening so my wife would kill me for riding on Sat and Sun and then going to play ball!

If you do it again later on I'd like to join you guys!

Yes, it looks like me and Spingineer so far, but it's going to happen.

You're more than welcome to join us. It's going to be a mellow, scenic ride, not a hammerfest. I'd love to meet you in person!

9am Sunday morning. Meet at the Half Moon Bay Fire Station, corner of Main Street and Purissima Rd.

Directions:
Go West on Hwy 92 until it dead ends. Turn left on Hwy1. Go about 1.5 miles, the fire station is on your left (just past a Ford dealership). Turn left onto Purissima Rd. If you get to the second light, you've gone too far.

My cell phone is 202-487-9524 if you get lost.

Reminder to those who are riding on Sunday -

Half Moon Bay can be foggy in the mornings, so be sure to bring some warm clothes for the early part of the ride. We'll be riding out of it as the day progresses. It's been in the high 60s here most of the week.

It was outright cold coming down from Skyline down Old La Honda. Foggy up at the top. The ground was really wet ... almost like rain on Skyline going towards 84 near Alice's Restaurant.

well..... yeah, there is. I can't make it on Sunday - prior commitment. :(

I guess that's why I was subliminally reading Saturday into this. Dang!! I really wanted to get out there and meet you folks.

Next time, for sure!!

Darn! That's too bad. The weather is going to be superb, too. 72 degrees and no fog.

Oh well, next time. Given the growing momentum on this NorCal Forum, I'm sure next time won't be too far away,

Descending Old La Honda (either east or west) isn't all that much fun, IMHO. I prefer making a figure-8 and going Old La Honda, Skyline, 84W, West Old La Honda, Skyline, 84E.

After chasing the club hammerheads through Big Basin and up Hwy 9 and Skyline today, and following that with riding home via Jamison Creek and Empire Grade, I'm pretty wiped. I think I'll be resting tomorrow. I hope to make it to another ride in the near future, though.

Nope, you heard it right. In fact, I saw a lot more riders going down Old La Honda today, and I was one of them. I must have counted about 20 riders going down on OLH while I was going up. I normally would make a right on Skyline, then down 84, but I was told Skyline was really wet and slick ... almost like it was raining. I think that's why a lot of riders decided to go back down the hill on OLH.

Thanks for leading the ride. By the time I got back to Santa Clara, the temp was 85, and sunny. So it definitely was a staying cool ride.

Sorry you guys had to wait for me. I'm so slow. One of these days, my hill climbing will improve.

Here are the few pics I did take:

I enjoyed the ride and the company! I guess the coast was 20 degrees cooler than inland, so the ride really did live up to its name :) .

Look forward to the next ride.
