We are getting into the hottest part of the year. For you car-free or car-lite types there is a way out. Both Marin County and Sonoma County have public transit that goes out to the coast. Sonoma county transit has two small buses that leave from Santa Rosa and go all the way out to the coast in the AM using Route 29. For a real Tour-de-Force catch the early bus out to Freestone and ride south into the Point Reyes area and catch a Marin bus back inland. Golden Gate transit bus 80 connects the two areas. Any day of the week you can catch several different bus 20s in Santa Rosa and ride out to Occidental or Duncans' Mills which are near the coast.
The Marin stagecoach route 68 has 4 runs a day (5 on Sat.) between the San Rafael transit center and downtown Point Reyes. A good ride would the from Point Reyes out to the Lighthouse and back. A hilly 40 miler. During Whale watching season the last few miles are limited to shuttle buses, hikers, and bicycles. No private cars.
