While cleaning up my ride for this weekends 150m tour, I noticed that when I spun the wheels they seemed to quickly come to a stop.

I pulled each from the bike to clean up and spun them by hand and found there to be more friction than I had anticipated.

They aren't the best - Ritchey Comp 28H front and back. They have a rubber boot to keep dirt from getting into the bearings, but those too seem to drag on the performance.

What should I expect from these wheels and what do you all expect your "better" wheels to do. I would hope that a good spin would set these things in motion for a good long time???

Also my back wheel is quite a bit heaver than the front. Now I know there's more there, but this seems to be too heavy. Any thoughts. The cassette is a Shimano CS-HG50-9, 9-speed, 12/23.

Thanks for the info.

Loosen the nuts on each side of the hub a bit. They are probably over tight.

yea i just got my bike back from the shop today for a tuneup, and the rear wheel isn't spinning like it used to. weird. i'll loosen up the QR's tomorrow and see how it does.

it might be overtightened or it needs servicing..

You can take out the bearings and clean everything.. Repack it with appropraite grease and assemble..

It should be roll smoothly but with no side-to-side travel and should not knock..

If you can feel the friction, the grease is dirty or the cones are too tight or both. Probably both.

Loosening the QR is not the way to adjust bearings. It has to be done with the axle cones.

Loosening the QR just means it will be easier for the wheel to fall off. Not a good idea.

A well adjusted wheel should spin for at least a minute.
