View Full Version : Q.R. skewer doesnt stay tight.
is this a clydesdale thing or,do i have a cheap skewer.
it seems as though once a ride,my rear tire ends up rubbing on the frame.now i gotta dismount reposition and, retighten.
this usually happens when im climbing or,when i stand up in the saddle, but usually when i have been riding enough to get warm.
it feels like im really tightening it down. so is my skewer just cheap and,no good,or what.

You shouldn't have that problem, but I'm not sure if its a cheap skewer or something else could be causing it. Are you sure your wheels are true? I'm not sure if that could cause it, but it might be worth looking into as that is a common Clyde problem.
yes,my wheel is true. im thinking i just need to go buy some good skewers. this one doesnt even have a name on it. just something that came on the wheel.

Get new skewers immediately. Even expensive ones are $50/pair. While failures are rare, nothing is perfect. And like many things, cost here indicates weight more than quality.
I've never heard of such a problem, so I doubt this is a 'Clyde' issue Are you sure you're "locking in" the hub once you tighten it (pushing the lever on the hub towards the frame)?
What bike is this? What is your rear wheel assembly? Is your chain the correct length?

I've never had this problem and I weigh 265lbs and I've been riding for over 2 years. Are you sure that you are tightening them enough in the first place? I get it so I can barely close the QR handle using all my might.

It could just be a bum skewer folks. Q.C. isn't perfect anywhere.
i have to agree with castron. i used the original - gnutti - quick release, with no problems.
those even felt more substantial and, they were over 30 years old
i looked on the sheldon brown thingy this evening and,he calls these -boutique - skewers.
and he generally gives them low ratings and, says they look good but dont compare with the sealed cam kind.
im gonna see if i can find some campy or, shimano or, better yet , GNUTTI , Since that is what was originally on there.
i cant use the original rear, because when the front tire - tacoed - the rear skewer BENT.
STRANGLY ENOUGH ,the front skewer, where the wheel bent,is perfectly fine. dont ask me how. i dunno.

Last week I hit the steepest part of my commute route and my rear wheel slipped forward and ground into the chainstay, needless to say I got to walk the rest of the way up the hill. For now I am going to chalk it up to not having it tight enough, I have done this hill two times since without a problem. But I think that QR has to be really tight to handle my 230 lbs coming off the saddle to pump up a hill. I would make sure where the skewer clamps in is clean and get it good and tight.

Look to make sure your axle is properly centered in the hub. If it's offset enough so that the tiniest bit is protruding past the the drop out, the skewer isn't going to tighten properly on that side.
