a.k.a. How To Successfully Battle The Subconscious' Attempts to Sabotage a Ride

The date: Wednesday, July 4th. The plan: drive my wife to work in downtown Mpls and hit the trails in and around the city of lakes. I attached the hatch rack and loaded my bike. While she got ready, I packed my recumbent seat bag and printed out a map of off-street trails and parkways.

We left around 10 am, I dropped her off, and was getting ready when I noticed that I had grabbed exactly one bike shoe and one work shoe. They were both in the shoe pile, and both look very much the same. Only problem is that one works with my clipless pedals and the other doesn't. Luckily I realized this before unstrapping the bike.

Arrgh.

I thought about buying a cheap pair of beartrap pedals for my worn out athletic shoes, then remembered what my feet felt like last time I rode more than 5 miles like that. I drove home. 45 miles. I drove back. 45 miles.

I had originally planned to ride from Minnehaha park along the Mississippi all the way into downtown St. Paul and back, but by now it was pushing 2:30. I rode as far as Ft. Snelling and back, about 11 miles. I did throw in one killer hill climb: about 100+ foot elevation over maybe 1/4 mile, short and steep (Hidden Falls park for those familiar with the area).

My lowest gear is about 59 gear inches. I made it about halfway up before I had to bail out of my clips and rest. Two pedestrians and two cyclists (walking their bikes) passed me while I puffed. After a few minutes, I managed to get started again and clipped in and made it to the top - got cheers from the peds and bikers as I passed them. Another rest at the top and the last few miles were gravy.

While I had planned a moderately paced, long ride, I settled for short and sweet. I was SOOOOO ready to just pack it in and lounge around for the day. Glad I stuck with it.

Like I always say. Any ride is better than no ride.

Affirmative on that. I got Mrs. Pup on a bike tonight, went 2 miles into town, had a light dinner, listened to a bit of live outdoor music, then took a round-about return for about 5 miles total. She's registered here but not yet posted.

She oh-so wants to try my recumbent, but we'll have to play with the seat, handlebars, and swap out the pedals for platforms. If she likes it, I'll have a reason to look for a better bike. :)

What kind of bent are you currently riding?

It's a Sun EZ1 SX. The stock tires were only 1.5", 65 psi, not clyde-rated. I upgraded to 1.95" x 110 psi tires. They're wide enough to carry over patches of gravel if necessary.

Karl, I'm glad you got your ride in. Way to go!

Hmm, I'm reminded of the old saying, "For want of a nail a shoe was lost, for want of a shoe a ride was lost...." :-)

To avoid problems like this again, you may want to consider keeping your cycling shoes in your car or truck. I do that.

I keep a spare set of helmet/shoes/cycling glasses/seat bag with minimum tools/high vis vest/cycling shorts/blinkies/headlamp AND a bike in the car :) .

My husband and I both work at the same place, and I normally ride home.

You can't be too prepared :p .

I don't think we're allowed yet! After a few episodes as described above, I came to the conclusion that not being properly equipped was robbing me of cycling opportunities.

Also, since I have 12 odd bicycles, having one stashed in the car means a little bit more room in the garage :D .

Girls have been allowed in Boy Scouts since at least when I was in (early 90's). I don't know of any girls that were in 'scouts, but I know that the rules stated they could be.

I am thinking that East Hill would've been a great candidate :D Wanna gimmie one of your bikes and make more room in the garage :p

That's interesting to know! However, let's just say that that was 'before my time' :p .

I'm actually working on the reverse of making room by giving them away. I'm trying to persuade Mr. East Hill to sell off his pickup :D .

He's not gone for it yet, though.

I am gradually learning to get my kit more organized. It was easy to go for a ride as a kid when all you had to do is make sure you had shoes if you had the "newer" style (beartrap) pedals. Now it's Camelbak, tool kit, top up the tires, camera, keys, wallet, cell phone, shoes, shorts, shirt, helmet, handlebar bag, bike rack, wheel straps, computer, sunglasses, etc, etc...

I should really grab a photo of my steel toe work shoes next to my Shimano mtb shoes - even my wife sympathized with me instead of taking an easy shot at my advancing old-timers memory. :D
