Classic & Vintage - Finished another Steyr project, please help with fenders and brake cables

Well I finished my Steyr Clubman today. It’s a really neat bike. Vintage Steyr Clubman frame and fork, Suede Selle Italia seat, bull horns, cane creel levers, Maillard hubs, aluminum Weinmann front rim, steel Rigida rear rim, original cottered cranks, single Suntor mighty shifter, Simplex rd and aluminum seatpost. As you can see it’s a 5 speed conversion. I live in a flat area so the gearing is well suited for my riding. I built it with parts I had laying around with the exception of the brake levers and seat post. I’ve only ridden it 1 time, but I am happy. I gotta say, with these bullhorns I’m really laid out on this sucker. So I have 2 questions?

1. Is it normal for the cables to be wrapped in the tape with this bar/lever configuration? The cables seem in the way

2. Will the SKS Chromoplastic fenders for 700cc wheels fit over my 27 inchers here. And what width will be best? I'll be running 1 1/8 size tires. I was looking at the 45mm’s.

Yeah, those cables do seem like there in the way. I think they are meant to be wrapped under the tape.

You can improve your shift response by replacing that solid gear cable housing with a more common sectioned unit, which will require an investment in downtube and chainstay cable stops. The continuous gear cable housings were my least favorite feature of the Clubman, which is otherwise a surprisingly good bike for its price range.

Steyr-Daimler-Puch evidently copied some ideas for the seat post decal from a smaller Austrian company. :)

I agree. The lack of braze-ons is disappointing. I may do the conversion you speak of soon.
