some goddamn punk stole my bike out of my front yard last night. yes, i know it should have been put away in my garage but i've always left it in my yard and never thought anything of it. i registered it on the national bike registry and the stolen bike registry. i'm going to the police station now to file a report but i have little confidence that they'll do anything. words can't express how pissed i am right now. i ride my bike to work every day and didn't find out it was missing until this morning. that bike was my only mode of transportation. i swear if i ever find out who took it, it'll be an unlucky day for them.
my worst fear is someone stealing one of my bikes. so i can sympathise with you. you will probably see it around.maybe a different color.
or as my brother said to me,if its worth anything, check the local pawn shops.
she will turn up.
Aren't pawn shops required by law to check the serial numbers?

That sucks man.....I'm starting to use mine a lot more for more than just rides. I'm riding to work and to occasional store and such now......so I'm having that fear too. But I do make sure to lock mine.
I had a bike stolen off my front porch about 15 years ago and may have gotten into biking that much sooner had that (almost new - only a few months old)bike not been stolen (and unable to be replaced).
That sucks. My bike is stored in the house. I don't really go anywhere on it that I need to park it but I will lock it if I do. Even at work, when I commute, it will be inside.

It is like horse stealing, people should be hanged. Well maybe not, but it sure makes one angry when it happens. Sorry man.

I'd rather see bike thieves staked out on an anthill with honey smeared in strategic locations.:p ;)

Naw, they should be whipped with a bicycle chain, 10 lashes for the first bike, 20 for the second, 30 for the third, etc.
Seriously, if you can get 10 years in jail for stealing a car, you should get 10 years in jail for stealing a bicycle.....

Lason,
How horrible for you. I'm sorry this happened. I hope you get your bike back or a replacement bike soon.
thanks. i was planning on doing some spinervals this weekend but i guess that's out of the question. i also found out they took my kid's bike too. i didn't even realize it because i was in shock from having mine stolen. his will be easy to replace though. mine was considerably more expensive so it may be a while before i get a new one. nothing like this has ever happened to me before so i'm really at a loss for words. i just hope to be riding again soon.

What is the make, model, size, color, and components are on the bike so folks can keep their eyes open?
Has it appeared on eBay or CraigsList to be sold?
In what state did this happen, in case the thief is still pedaling it around?
it's a blue/silver trek 7000 hybrid. 17.5 inch frame. it has a cateye cadence computer, a serfas grifter pump and a banjo bros saddle bag filled with spare tube, tire levers and multi-hex wrench mounted to it. my kid's bike was a cheapie honda team racing mountian bike. it had woody woodpecker on it. it happened in st. louis, zip code 63132. i don't think the thugs who took the bikes are smart enough to put them on ebay or craigslist but i've been checking anyway. so far nothing though.

I had a bike stolen in 1968 and I am still pissed when I think about it. I was racing at the time and had just setup the bike perfectly...Probably good I never caught the guy because I would probably be languishing in some prison serving out a murder charge. NEVER LEAVE YOUR BIKE UNATTENDED!!! I guess I really don't need to say that huh?

Here's something good! It's an older bike, but a good one. The Price is right as well.

i really can't afford to replace my bike at the moment. i'm trying to save for a car as i don't have one of those either, so it's going to be a while before i get a new bike.

Sorry to hear that but hopefully you've learned a valuable lesson. Leaving a bike anywhere outside not attached to something is like hanging a sign on it that says, here ride me home.
well, in a bit of good news it turns out that i'll be coming into some money this week and my wife is encouraging me to get a new bike. i don't know if i'd get the trek again. what would be a good hybrid type bike priced between $300-$400? my only requirements would be a rigid front fork and trigger shifters.

If you have a nice LBS, like me, you can get a Trek 7.2FX. It is a great bike and I really can't say enough about it. :) It fits your requirement too.

The Trek is a good bike, and in the right price range. However, it has grip shifters. Not a catastrophe by any means.

Any luck with recovering the stolen bike or finding clues from thieves who might be trying to sell it? Good luck with your search.

True Story:
A few years ago my buddy had his new trolling motor stolen off of his boat in his own yard. I asked him if he had check the listings on E-Bay. Yep... it was right there on E-Bay. Inner City Pawn Shop selling it. We called the Police and found out that as long as the Pawn Shop takes down the proper information THEY CAN'T BE HELD LIABLE for Stolen property! Of course the Pawn info was all BOGUS too.

Nuh-uh. The 7.2FX has the thumb and finger shifters (I'm sorry I don't know the name for them.) Not grip shifters. I wouldn't have bought the bike with grip shifters; I hate those things!

Hmm. I thought all the Trek fx series had grip shifters. I stand corrected. Thank you for setting me straight.
anyone got any opinions on the specialized sirrus or gary fisher wingra? my brother in law knows the head mechanic at an lbs so i may end up getting a deal on the specialized. another lbs has a 20% off coupon so that may bring the fisher into my price range.
Some PD's have pawn shop task forces that check for stolen property. Check with your locals.
A good recommendation is engraving your name and Driver license number on the bottom of your seatpost.
That way you can prove it's yours. (I;ve heard people keep copies of their licenses in the seatpost, but I wouldn't want the dirtbags to have my home address. (although I gues you could mark it out.)
i have the reciept with the serial on it so i can prove it's mine.
