Advocacy & Safety - Cycling in the Netherlands

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It's nice to see I'm not the only person in the world who likes to decorate my handlebars with a garland of fake flowers. :D

Isn't that done so Amsterdam riders will be able to find their bikes among the thousands that are parked in places such as that huge railroad station? (the one with the tiered walkways built out over the canal.)
The "American" way of doing that would be different colors of electrical tape.

Maybe the "American dude" way, but it's not happening on this female's bike. :p ;)

Hey, not problem at all. Whatever works. :)
If I were living in Holland, I would probably ride a fixie, as I do now. Aren't most of the bikes over there the classic, Heavy-but-it-lasts-decades, three speeds? They certainly look like heavy but stout machines.

The flowers look like basic decoration to me. The Dutch are rather keen on flowers and floral displays (which make U.S. arrangements look absolutely pitiful by comparison). Paint is more normally used to distinguish bikes from each other.

Most of the everyday bikes are really heavy, but not necessarily 3 speeds. I think my Dutch Batavus was a 7-speed, very beautiful and sturdy. There are lots of road bikes too, but they're not so nice for daily transport over cobblestones....
