... it's a weekend, and I'm not on-call, and my ride is < 50 miles, Call a doctor!
43 miles and 2834 feet climbing ... does that count as a real ride???
depends how much you hammered, as long as its not junk miles its ok :)
I only did 18 miles, and it is a definite hard ride.
But then it was MTbike. Up Down, through water, over rocks, takin' drops,
power through sand, scratched by branchs.
Up a canyon, down a canyon, back up, mostly single track, with some dirt road mixed in.
Found some new trails I'd never ridden and bombed those. Only to find I had to climb back out.
And after a Ruby's chili dog at the Shake shack on PCH.
Damn I had fun.
Life is really, really good.
It's not the quantity of miles, but that you had fun.

riding at 12mph for 30miles w/ no climbs = junk miles imo
He had enough ft of climbing, I don't consider this junk

I have to admit, there was a good stretch where I was hammering ... but that was from mile 5-10. Fairly flat road, and was riding alone. One guy drafts behind me for a little while, then we hit a light. He takes the lead, and I just hang onto his wheel for dear life. Picked up some good speed, and HR up to 170 bpm.
But compared to what I have been doing lately (100, and 200 miles respectively the past couple of weeks), this seems like I hardly did anything).

An easy week is good for you. Coaches I've talked to recommend 3 hard weeks followed by 1 easy week if you're training for something. Keeps you fresh and gives your muscles time to recover.

Oh for cry eye, 25+ is pretty damn substantial by normal standards. My ride tomorrow won't be incredible, but I dare a single one of you to call it junk miles - your ass will be mine if you do. No, Ron, you aren't ill.

That's a perfectly fine ride. My first ride after bringing my road bike home from the store was 5 miles, perhaps 100-200 vertical feet of descending, and a 10 MPH moving average. I was extremely sore for the rest of the day. But it's the ride that got me hooked on the sport.

But 20 of those miles were junk miles ... :) I was just comparing what I had been doing on past weekends, to what I did today. But if I did call you out, and said you were riding junk miles, and my ass were yours, what would you do with it? :p Now am I ill? :p

So wrong. All of my miles are junk miles.
It's not about distance, speed, or elevation - it's a state of mind.

Well, at this point all I want to do with anyone's ass is ride withit. :p I'm so desperate to get on my bike. I've got this disgusting cold and I'm hacking and I have so much to do today (which is why I had to bail on the BF movie get together), but I'm determined to get some kind of ride in! I'll take anything - fortunately, I have Griffith Park in my neighborhood (practically).

Thank you for changing your avatar! :D
Anyhow, sorry to hear about your cold. It's very easy to catch a cold while on a plane. Been there, done that. Off for a cool ride with Sesamecrunch at the coast ... hopefully it won't have too much climbing ... I want junk miles.

I don't know about you but I did my first "real" ride this morning since getting my road bike. I rode almost 33 miles and 2500+ ft of climbing. I promised the wife to get back early or I would have extended it... :(
All in all, I'm just getting into road cycling and since I live on a hill, all my rides ends with a big climb at the end of it. Thanks to my garmin 305, I found out that I hit a 13% grade at the end. Don't know if that is a good thing or not. :D Junk miles or not, I'm just glad to be able to get miles in!

I dont know about junk miles, but after bringing home my "official" first road bike on Sunday, I have put in 60 miles on it this week. A few climbs, but a lot of flats. At least my legs dont think they were junk, and thats all that matters to me.

So what is the ratio of elevation to miles that is considered junk miles? I've only ridden 225 miles and climbed 15000 feet so far this month, should I consider them all junk miles?
I only did 58,000 feet last month for 903 miles. How much of that was junk, too?

You silly people are cracking me up. I just got back and the only junk out there for me was my crappy cold. You won't believe this George and John, but I had to stop TWICE on Trash Truck Hill and I didn't even attempt the canyons. I was just coughing, hacking and blowing so much (for once, I even grossed myself out). I saw Big John and some of his harem along with Shprung out riding and waved at them. I must have looked a fright with all the snot strings hanging down my chin.

Did it help clear your head, though? I find that riding clears my sinuses when I've got allergies or a cold.
Feel any better?

Thanks for asking, John. :) Yes, a little better except for the dripping - so, no, it didn't completely clear the sinuses, but I do feel less lethargic. Plus, I have to now get off here and function whether I want to or not. Sigh. But I needed a fix desperately! Did you ride today?

As of right now yes, but I have a ice hockey game that afternoon. So I am thinking of stopping by, dropping of your jersey, and doing part of the ride.

I figure a couple days on the bike and you'll be as good as new!
I ended up riding up to Chantry Flats this morning since I've been slacking off on the climbing lately. Besides, I wanted to test the Lews out on a sustained climb.

Well, my other excuse was the route was heading for Half Moon Bay, and I knew I was going to do that today ... hence the reason for skipping out the rest of the ride. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking with it. :D

Sorry about your cold. I think the first time I met you, on Solvang, you were having the same thing. And if you are anything like you were then, the snot was not too noticeable. But then again, I wasn't with you for the whole 200 miles.
I'm actually trying to reduce my mileage, and you are trying to build them up. I think my body needs a little rest to recover, so this gives me the perfect opportunity to bring in my bike to the shop.
But then again ... I'm probably being a wussy!
