how is it as a daily commuter?

I know someone that has an 06 model and he loves it. He came from having a brompton but wanted speed at the sacrifice of the ultrasmall fold. He's very happy - they are nice bikes (I don't think his had the TT bars but the frame and a lot of parts are the same). I don't want to put you off as I think he had bad luck but he did experience a frame failure around the hinge in not-very-many miles but got a new one on warranty with no problems at all. I hear that the steel frame is a lot nicer to ride than more stiff alu Dahons as it has a more natural flex to it that takes away some of the bumps. Hope that's some help. Sorry it's not first hand from me. I'm sure there are people on this board that do or have so there's likely to be some more helpful posts beneath this soon...

It's kind of a weird setup. It is designed as a road bike, i.e. for speed and performance. But let's face it, internal hubs and suspension don't have much business on a real road bike. And TT bars / bullhorns are rare for anything other than a real time trial bike, track bikes, or other SS / Fixed bikes.

For $700, you can get a Xootr Swift, put a pair of bar ends on it, flip the stem, and you've got a bike that can perform equal the Speed Pro TT.

However, I will say that the Dahon has a nicer fold and is aesthetically pleasing. I don't even like orange bikes that much and I think it looks nice. ;)

My personal preference for commuter bikes is to go cheap and reliable, e.g. something with just an internal hub (as opposed to the SRAM DualDrive). Plenty of Dahons will do that fairly well, as they have good fold. Plus I don't think that model has a rack. If it did, that would be a REALLY weird thing to stick on a road bike....

I agree with B; unless you are planning on using it on public transport or taking it into your office, a Swift would be better. But if you need a small fold, it's a great set up. I'm very impressed with thier component selection, but unimpressed with their hinge. Also, it actually is nice to have a few extra spokes in your wheel.

I ran over a thick stick that kicked itself into my spokes on my present bulletproof wheels. The stick lodged in the forks at about 14MPH. I was lucky not to go over the bars, and the wheel remained (relatively) true.

Ha ha. Yes, there are, but you have to go on the Bronx trails to manage to properly wedge them in your spokes.

There are great trails and greenways throughout the city. New Yorkers, be sure to support Times Up! and Transportation Alternatives.

Hmm. I'll mention that to myself the next time I see me. That's actually a good idea. I thought the forums search was working though - is it broken again?

@ pm124 - it might help you to know about the great lesser-known feature of Google called 'Google this site'.

Basically - type the following in the usual google searchbox and it will only return results from this site:
"site:www.bikeforums.net[space]my search term"

Naturally - don't type "[space]" - just a normal spacebar space will suffice ;)

Yeah I have this bike and commute on it. I replaced the tires with wider ones --- the narrow ones don't cut it at night when you can't see every rut in the road. The bottom bracket feels like crap and the bike is noisy until you pretty much rebuild everything and figure out where the noises are coming from. There is no rear quick release. I ride mine with a rack and panniers, and that makes it great.

Would I buy it again? No.
Don't waste your money going for the TT as a commuter. I did, and I don't think the extra 250$ was worth the TT bars/shifters. The brakes on this thing are horrendous as well. I wonder how they are on the regular Speed Pro (brakes on the TT are road bike side-pull, on the regular they are V-brakes).

Sorry about the digression, and thanks for the tips on searching, LP. Brian, the problem with the search engine is essentially that it is difficult to find specific responses. This is especially true if you remember a few terms in a specific response. The AND operator doesn't get you there. Another problem is that some threads are 50 pages long, and the search will only pull up the entire thread.

The good new is that IB bought BikeForums and vBulletin. I imagine that the search feature will eventually be resolved.

waddup cris. . . . . well i bought the bike and can say its exactly what i wanted. . . . space is at a premium so i needed a folder, but my d5 vitesse just wasn't cutting it for the daily commute.

this bike is fast, has a gear for every situation, stable at high speeds, but like was mentioned, has a very harsh suspension that doesn't absorb all that much, but ill take it as a tradeoff for the speed and convenience.
