So I took off my brakes today, I've been meaning to for a while. I also went to the local skatepark and learned 3's. I'm not saying riding brakless is magicl, but it did the trick for me. Plus my bike looks a lot cleaner...

Took mine off a while ago. Don't think I'm putting them back on for a long time.

I need my brakes. They save me from hitting trees, people, and stuff.
I don't know what i'd do without them.

I don't need brakes at all. I love riding brakeless so much better.
When i get my bmx, i'm not even going to take the ease to put them on lol.

Odd, seems like brakes could've prevented rev.monkeys death. Unless I read something wrong.

I thought his brakes snapped, or something like that.

sorry, bad question but whos rev.monkey?
He was a member on this forum, who died biking in a parking lot when a car backed up and hit him. It was something like that. RIP.
Not to make light of the death of a fellow biker, but if the car hit him, I don't think brakes would have helped. Only time I ride with brakes are trails. I have brakes on my challenger but not on the dirtbike.

If you've been on a BMX for more then 5 mins you know how to stop it with no brakes. Rev.monkey was killed by an inconsiderate person that wasn't paying attention while backing out of a parking space is my understanding of the whole thing.

I think you mean, "Brainless is the way."
Mother Nature says, "No brain, no pain."
I ride with front and rear brakes. A good number of my tricks require them.
And off-topic; I've been working on the rock walk, but I can't seem to get the second part of the walk completed. I do the first 180 on my front tire, then when I land backwards, the reverse motion and my weight on the pedals cancel out and I can't continue the spin for a full 360. Any ideas? Or should I just keep watching vids of people doing it correctly...

I have both brakes o/
Never tried to ride brakeless... I need brakes because I use my bike in the city... Yesterday my brakes saved me from being hitted by a truck (not by an 18 wheeler, but by those kind of cars that have space in the back for transporting things... You call both trucks, I think...) That was at an parking lot... The guy was talking with his son in the car and didin't realized I was there...

I live in a downtown urban core type of area. There are plenty of fixie riders with no brakes, including from a bike messenger outfit on the next block. There are also plenty of people who have been hit and injured by them at intersections and on sidewalks because usually, instead of stopping at light changes, etc., they take little detours around things. If it was up to me, police departments would make ridding the streets of brakeless bikes a high priority. But the current obsession by mostly young men to ride without brakes is reflective of our it's-all-about-me kind of society where common sense community obligations don't matter anymore. I'm all for no brakes --- on a dedicated track. I live a mostly carless life, so I'm as much a pedestrian as I am a cyclist. I can't tell you how many times I've come close to being wiped out by a yahoo with no brakes.

alright, how does one stop without brakes? i just finished rebuilding my F4 yesterday, and went out rolling around town to test it out. i was going down the sidewalk and another bike (mountain-bike) came around a corner right in front of me. i hit my brakes, which are currently just rear, but i didn't have the cables clamped enough so they just slipped out, and so i didn't stop, and had to jam my heels into the ground to keep from hitting the guy. i've used the old shoe trick (rubbing toe of shoe on the tire to act as a brake) but mainly only if i need to. so how do you stop without brakes?

Put your foot on the rear tire. Steer into the grass.
Watch more videos. Practice lots more.
Can you do them?
And yeah, I guess I just need to watch more vids and practice more.

Brakes may or may not have allowed him to prevent the car backing into him, but it was his head hitting the pavement (I understand he fell backwards) that caused the trauma.

Yeah trauma to the back of the head is a very bad thing with or without brakes. I never knew the guy but he seems to have been a pretty neat person.

I'm sure he saw the car being backed up right before he got hit, if he jammed the front brake a few scarpes on your forehead wont be as bad.
Also, to the guy that almost got hit by a truck, those are called pick-up trucks. I have a friend who has a gyro thing on his BMX, front and back to do stalls and what not, they don't get in the way. Brakeless bikes shouldn't be allowed on roads or downhills, but only skateparks where you don't need them for anything Parking lots are ok, I guess.
Then again, I never really rode a bike with no brakes what so ever so I wouldn't know why you would enjoy it. Also, I don't BMX much, I just hang out on the forums.

I suppose then you also don't realize how easy it is to stop without brakes. I actually stop better with my shoes then I do with my actual brakes.
Then you need some better brakes. :p
I've never riden brakeless. I use my bike for my work commute, and on all of the busy streets and stuff I wouldn't want to be without brakes.

haha i no man first my front brake wore out then my back and i realised it took the same time so stop with my shoe as my crappy old rear brake so i ripped er off yesterday,
you learn to trust yourself more without brakes and become more of a flowy rider without em. i love not haven brakes, and most obsticals u can just jump or dodge outa the way isted of slammen on the brakes.
rock on no brakes!

Ever since I started back in the 80's through today, I've always had front & rear brakes. Just riding my Blend without a front brake feels very funny. I may just have to put one on.

Fixies can stop with no brakes. They just pedal slower...

I don't know why people keep bringing up the poor guy who got backed over by a car. Yeah, he didn't have brakes, but it was one person in an unfortunate situation. Apparently in 2004, 725 people on bikes died in traffic. I bet all of them had brakes...
Also, 2 years ago I was skateboarding on the sidewalk. I got hit by and SUV, it wasn't too bad because I was aware of my suroundings and knew I had to be ready for idiots. I was in a crosswalk and the SUV was stopped at a stopsign and then pulled out into me. I guess she was watching traffic in only one direction, which wasn't where I was coming from, she saw an opening and went for it. Somebody tell me how brakes would have helped me out. The fact that I couldn't stop quick made me pay closer attention to what was going on. Same with riding fixed gear bikes in traffic...
