Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I heard a bump at the back door, which usually indicates that Zoe (female GSD) wants to come inside... I opened the door and did not see a dog. I DID see a SNAKE ON THE DOOR JAM - oh, what ever you call it - I.m still freaked & watching where I put my toes. If it's at head height on my back door when I see it, where else might it be when I don't expect to see it?

Sorry, but I'm thinking about where my toes are too. I actually WOKE UP HUBBY, but the snake was gone (which actually sounds like a Warren Zevon song...) Tour de France to SNAKE AT THE DOOR is, however, upsetting.

Why are so many people so afraid of snakes?
Guess I can't talk, though... spiders FREAK.ME.OUT.
Why are so many people so afraid of snakes?...
just because...
...no idea really I've been told that I used to scream blue murder over anything snake like even when i was 3 or 4 years old - I don't scream like a .... anymore but snakes still give me the heebie jeebies.

I don't spend energy wondering about my fear of snakes when I could be using that energy to devise ways to avoid them.

Guess I can't talk, though... spiders FREAK.ME.OUT.It's not the snakes or the spiders (or rats, or mice, or lizards, or cockaroaches, or enormous flying beetlebeasts) I'm afraid of...it's the surprises.
Nothing cooler than swimming with a 14' Ball Python. A well fed one, of course.

1. Black mamba
2. Green mamba
3. Cape cobra
4. Forest cobra
5. Egyptian cobra
6. Mozambique spitting cobra (M'fezi)
7. Rinkhals
8. Puff Adder (responsible for more bites than any other snake in South Africa.)
9. Gaboon adder
10. Berg Adder
11. Boomslang (African Tree Snake)
12. Twig snake (Southern vine snake)
Those are the venomous ones from South Africa - but all but the 12th has anti-venom available.
Don't kill snakes! Just leave them alone. A lot of deaths are from people trying to kill them or interfering with them in some way. With 15 deaths a year from snakes in the US, you're more likely to trip running off to find a spade and die, than die from the bite. (South Africa - 1986 there were 220 000 deaths from car accidents, 2000 from cancer, 220 from lightning, and less than 20 from snake bite.)
I understand on the surprise aspect though - my wife and I were camping and walked through an unlit section and heard this hiss and felt the ground moving. She thought it was an anthill, I thought of snakes... it was actually a burst water pipe.
