I just checked out the standings on cyclingnews.com.. and apparently zabriskie was over 2.5 minutes behind the peloton. What the hell.
Was he in a wreck? i don't recall the announcers mentioning his name with any of the wrecks.

Since no one seems to want to answer this guy....I'll ask too....what happened to DZ?

He worked hard all day for his teammate. i.e. - he did his job.

CSC was chasing the break for most of the stage hoping to keep the yellow jersey. Dave Z probably was out in the wind a lot and they did close the gap.

He used all his energy setting pace for Cancellara; to help him retain the yellow jersey. Then he dropped off the back to avoid any crashes. And he had also used his energy doing his job for his teammate.

Were you expecting him to win the whole tour?

DZ is there for support and his TT skills not for the GC.

well i know this. 165 guys or more are there as support riders and not gc candidates. However, DZ is known as a powerful rider, and most people wouldn't expect him to be one of 4 riders to fall off of the peloton....
Even though he did work hard for his teammate, no other csc riders fell off. Which leads us to assume that there had been some sort of wreck.

He's deliberately losing time so when he goes on a break for a stage win later in the race, the GC teams won't be worried about him and won't chase him down.

interesting strategy if you are correct.

Is it just me, or does Dave Z seem like the wind has gone out of his sails a little bit? He's still pretty wry and dry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVKNBUpTJBY--“All these races really are is so I can get good form for mountain biking in the off-season”), but it seems like his heart isn't in it quite like it used to be. Maybe he was thinking of more of a leadership role for himself?

Oh, and I wish he'd update his website. It doesn't appear to have been touched for a year or so.

It's a mix of the reasons I read here:

1. Mr Z was tired after working hard for Cancellara
2. Losing a few minutes eliminates him as a thread in the coming days if he decides to break away for a stage win
3. The 2 leaders are clearly Sastre and Schleck
4. He said to French l'Equipe the end of the stage was dangerous and he didn't want to get caught in a crash
