it was parked, i was doing a 30mile path..
they broke out a window, and all they took was a pack of a smokes :(
another reason to go car free, and to quit smoking. a sign??
Or don't lock your car. Which costs more - the window or the smokes? I'd rather have someone open my car door and rummage around than break my window and rummage around.

Yep, my old car and any that i've had previously I'd either leave a door unlocked or window down..never left anything for anyone to steal..unless they wanted the car but a good car theif can defeat any lock so that leaves the amatures who are usually only looking for quick things to grab. I've never been broken into and all my friends think i'm a fool...of course one of my friends had 6 laptops stolen out of his car trunk one night....what 'fool' keeps "6" laptops in his car??!!

Hide everything. If they can't see it, they won't break your window to take it. A friend of mine had a window broken and all that was taken was his sweater on the back seat. They didn't even open the ashtray to see if there was change in it (there was) or take his CD's. I guess someone was just cold that night.

Do you have a car mainly to ride to the trail? If you can ride 30 miles on a trail, it seems like you could also ride to the trail.
If you're seriously considering going carfree, we'll be glad to help you out! :)

I had a friend who had his car broken into... they busted out the window and stole his cd's.
Two nights later (and BEFORE he had the broken window repaired) someone broke out the window on the OTHER side of the car and stole his stereo.
So much for leaving it unlocked so they won't break a window. :p

To steal a pack of smokes?? Jeesh...
I'm sorry to hear about your car window, that sucks. In my experience, people rummage through 'my' car (my father parks his car by my place, so I tend to use it the most) on a regular basis, stealing loose change, etc. Since we have no power locks/windows/anything the doors/windows are often unlocked/open. Apparently our stereo is not worth stealing, nor is the car.
The main hassle we get with the car break ins is that we occasionally find a cigarette butt or ash in the car from a would be thief who happens to be smoking while rummaging for loose change.

I remember when my mother used to have a car back in the '90's, it was broken into while she was at work and the radio/casette player was lifted. I'm pretty sure she had the doors and windows locked, so I think the thief used some kind of tools or somethin'.

Why not get an alarm? When a thief sees a blinking red light on the dash, he'll move on to an easier target.

That's crappy. When I had a convertible I never locked the doors and never left anything in the car. When I parked it overnight I usually left the glove box open too, just so you could see there was nothing in it. A couple of times someone rummaged around in the car but got nothing.

About 5 years ago, I had a 92 Mercury Capri convertible. The top was getting old, so I finally shelled out the $500 to get the top replaced. Not a week later, someone slit my top to get in, took MAYBE a pair of cheap sunglasses. I don't keep valuables or CDs in my car. So I got to pay for a top again (they cut me a break and only charged me $400 the second time.)Stupid kids.
