This is just a note for all those people who are thinking of picking up the sport to really encourage them to do so. With my school we go to an outdoor education campus for 6 months, and down there 3 times a week we have either run/mountain biking races.
As I have never been a great runner I decided I'd give mountain biking a go and bought myself a GT Avalanche 1.0 Disc. After my first ride, I knew I wanted more. I found myself riding as much as 5 times a week, during my freetime and after hiking on the weekends, I couldn't be kept off my bike.
Down there they also taught us how to maintain our bike and fix most problems. The most amazing thing was at the very start of the semester we had out fitness testing. Through mountain biking I went from 8-3 in the beep test, to 11-7 and i felt that I could have further, but I had the flu so I did not go as far as I could have.
Now that I am back in Sydney, I still can't keep off my mountain bike. Even if i'm going around doing trials-type riding in the city, its just another excuse to do some exercise and have some fun with friends. Basically, anyone thinking of investing in a mountain biking, you really should, its a great way to get fit, to meet new people and also gives you a quick way of getting around!
