Mountain Biking - Hydraulic Discs

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was hoping for some guidance on this topic, at the moment I have shimano cable discs, which really are not that good, and i want to upgrade to hydraulic. What i wanted to know is, which is better, Shimano Deore or Hayes, and what is the price difference?
Thanks

You are going to find different views on all those brakes. Some will be negitive and some positive. The best thing to do is try and find riders who are currently using the brakes you mentioned and see if they will let you try their bikes.
Just be sure to pay attention to which rotors are on the bikes. Bigger rotors will give you better stoping power.
If you shop around you should be able to get any of them for 200USD or less for a set.
All in all they are all good brakes and will definitly be a huge improvment over your current set up.
My brakes of choice are Hopes but you would be looking at 350USD.
You may also want to check out Grimeca System 8 or 12.

I've tried both and the Deore's modulate better, but the hayes have more power (both use 160mm rotors). So use just have to decide whats more important to you. They are both really good, it usually come down to what yo uwant in a brake.

i have Hayes hfx-9's they are farily easy to adjust and have good power/mod. but this is the only set of discs i have used so this isent saying much. a friend of mine also has some older hayes and her dad has the deore ones that he likes a lot, hes also a fairly big guy aswell.

Hey starke,
I've been using Armor(dice whiplash)hydro's for over six months now,and these babies kick some serious ass.
For around 440 dollars australian(providing you have disc ready hubs on your ride)you can experience the power of hydro.
You won't be sorry!!
On supergo.com, you can get the HFX-9 as a pair for 200 which is a good deal.

I heard pretty good things about the Deore hydraulics.

Deore and Xt hydros are pretty popular on the shore because they are easy to fix (breaking levers is common) and the modulate really well. I use and like hayes but thats because I have no touch anyways :)

supergo.com doesn't even sell HFX-9s.
A lot of people prefer the Deores for the easier bleeding and mineral oil for the fluid.
hey STINKY5 I've been looking at those Armour hydros and hadn't found anything on the net, but my LBS and an ad that I've seen say nothing but good things about them. Great to see some 'real' users liking them too. Any other feedback?
