View Full Version : Q About Versus Coverage - Not Bashing ...

I know everyone likes to bash the Versus TDF coverage, but I'm just happy to have cycling on my TV.

My question (and I'm sure this has already been answered):

I taped the live 3 hour coverage (early morning in central US). I sometimes check in on the several repeat broadcasts during the day (usually 2 hours). Tonight I decided to watch the late night broadcast (stage 1, can't get enough). I didn't really pay much attention during the day, but when I actually sat down to watch at night, it took me a while, but something seemed off. During the helicopter shot of the beautiful estate, Bobke said something like, "That's a nice house!" Whoah, earlier Phil Liggett had given his compliments to the head gardener of the estate and had even named the property. Then it hit me, the live coverage was Phil and Paul, the latenight was Bob and Trautwig. I'm sure this has been beaten to death already, but it was news to me today.

So, what's the deal exactly. It was the same video, after the crash they talked about Cavendish, but the Yanks didn't know McEwan was involved, Phil and Paul did. On the last climb Bob and Al didn't know that Millar was at the front of the peleton and still in contention for King Of The Mountains, Phil and Paul were playing the scenarios out in real time.

What exactly is the breakdown of the multiple broadcasts during the day? I'm taping for posterity (which seems like a good call after today's superhuman effort by Robbie) and guess I'll tape the live morning broadcast.

Sorry for beating what I'm sure is a dead horse, but it's all new to me.

Morning/live is Phil and Paul. Evening is Bob Roll.

I prefer and record the morning coverage.

I record both and try to watch the live coverage in the morning to see the race unfold, and fast forward through the prime time coverage for additional interviews that they don't catch live.

Tape both? Yup, I'm developing quite an archive!

They pretty much answered it, but also keep in mind that the live morning coverage has more commentary as well. They get to ramble abit more, for better or worse. In the evening, they cut some of the more obviouse junk filler and add the interviews and shorts.

phil and paul (along with GWB) are two very good reasons for me NOT to move back to the US.

Plus, the statute of limitations hasn't worn out for generally being a scoundrel.

is that what i am?

Oh yikes! NO! I sincerely apologize - that was too harsh of a word if the true meaning of it is used.

I've been using it with friends for so long that it's lost it's true meaning to all of us. And as you know, some things don't translate well with strangers over the internets. so... oops.

I was trying to be amusing, not insulting. And that sums up my whole life since 1983.

I also noticed tonight that even on the evening show, Phil and Paul picked up the coverage when the peloton got within a few miles of the finish.
