Hi everyone. Is it safe to take my bike to Hyde Park after a Sox night game? The game probably ends around 10:30-11:00.

Would I take the lake path or stay on regular streets?

Thanks for any pointers.

I don't know if I would ride in the environs of Cellular Field at 11:00pm. Isn't Robert Taylor just across the Ryan?

I would say no.

I would say no. It's not the safest area. If you do ride through there ride through well lit areas.

Thanks for your opinions!

It looks like I will have to drive. Too bad.

Well, the Taylor homes are actually all gone now, with new condos currently being built in their place. If you haven't been there lately, you'd be floored by the changes. IIT campus is just across the highway and boasts beautiful recent buildings by Rem Koolhaus and Helmut Jahn, and CPD headquarters is at 35th and Michigan. This is not the war zone that it used to be.

You'd probably be fine if you rode 31st to the lake and then headed south along the path. That would be a safe route 99 times out of 100. 39th St. is a little hairier.

Then again, if it's a hot summer weekend night in July, you can have all sorts of idiots out and about (in Wrigleyville as well for that matter).

If it were me, I'd do it on a weeknight but not on a weekend. Then again, I'm not really comfortable riding in most parts of the City on Friday and Saturday nights, unless I'm in the Wicker Park area (tons of cyclists) or it's Critical Mass. There are just too many drunken idiots out there in their cars.

25 years ago when I worked down by McCormick Place and I didn't have to tell people I was the new white boy from the suburbs, I was told to not to stray too far away from the park by south siders of all colors. Here's to hoping a lot has changed since then.

Hold on a second. I ride through the South Side all the time and never have had a problem.

Stay cool, stay respectful, stay alert and you won’t have a single problem. If you’re drunk and stupid and loud and riding your bike, then you’re inviting trouble. Which can be said for any neighborhood you pass through.

East of the Dan Ryan isn’t great, but you can scoot over to the lakefront quickly. I’d ride up to Halsted and take that North (I ride S. Halsted all the time, never had trouble).

Ride your bike. If you get out there and don’t like what you see or are feeling intimidated or afraid, jump on the red line with your bike and head home.

Don’t let imagined racism or fear of the raging black man keep you from riding. Once you get out there you'll find we’re all just people. Don’t be stupid but don’t let fear rule your life.

From my experience, the black guy will leave you alone, it’s the drunk white guy in Bridgeport that I’d watch out for.

No racisim intended, but I'm guessing you haven't sat jury duty on a trial like I recently did. We're not all the same (hopefully), there's groups (whites, blacks, reds, yellows, heck even greens and blues) that have no respect for human life....theirs or others. A little fear is a good thing, I'm thinking.

I try to avoid riding at night in general. If you must, make sure you're flashing in various places. As for whether riding at night in the south side or the north side is more dangerous, I have to concur with what others have said: a drunken idiot is a drunken idiot no matter what street he's swerving down. The other day I was nearly plowed into a pulp by a guy driving a good 40 mph down my residential street (didn't even pretend to slow down for the stopsigns or the speedbumps), way up north in Andersonville. If you are worried about hazards (human or natural) I would say stick to the well-lit, wider streets and don't bother with the Lake Shore Trail at night. Anyway, I lived in Hyde Park all last year, rode some in the south side, never had any problems.

Well, I ended up riding my bike home. The game ended around 11 and I just went across Pershing and then down MLK. I will do it again, it was no problem. And fast.

On the weekend it may be less attractive.
