How do you know what ... tastes like:rolleyes:
I don't care too much for the bottled Gatorade except for the Rain version. I normally buy the powder and mix it to suit my taste.

No. I like it when I'm hot and sweaty. Much better than Powerade imho.

When I am hot even a little water makes me sick but I can drink diluted Gatorade all day long. I average about a case/week. Has anyone tried the bottled Accelerade yet?

In this thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=314841&highlight=common+sense) I compared it to "overly sweetened, artificially flavored saliva", and posted my homemade alternative.

I love it. +1 on better than Powerade. Gatorade has as sweeterner and carbohydrate source glucose, sucrose and fructose. Powerade has high fructose corn syrup. I am anti voluntary intake of high fructose corn syrup, which I blame in part for helping with the fattening of America because it is so cheap and in nearly everything.

dilute it 50/50 with water. tastes 50% better.

I can tolerate Gatorade dilouted. I've found that the generic diet orange soda sold in the local Safeway is cheaper then G'ade, tastes better, and dilutes just as well.
Diluted 50% for me also, and that is only if I am going very far, otherwise I stay with water.

I don't like any of those products. There's something about them that activates my gag reflex. For cycling purposes, I just fill my water bottles with half orange juice and half water, to which I add a pinch of salt (I like to use grey salt marsh salt from Brittany, but that's just a personal choice). This is much cheaper, tastes better and is just as effective (and probably healthier) than anything you can buy.
I like Gatorade but it is not realy that good for cycling. Heed is better - less calories and less chance to upset your stomach.

Never have liked the taste of it. I do the plain old water thing.
Can't stand it. I go simple... I simply squeeze a bit of lime into my water. Takes away the taste of plastic and is pleasant enough to encourage more water drinking... which is good.

Nope, don't like Gatorade. We have something here much better. Find coconut tree (they are very common), knock down a green coconut - make hole, insert straw.
Man, it is good and good for you! (a lot cheaper than Gatorade - as in free)

Not me! Next to wine and wine coolers, it's my favorite drink.
I use it every ride. Generally works well for me but I've gone to alternating swigs between Gaide and water. Probably the same and mixing 50/50.........but I like just plain water.

I use the powder and mix it a bit less than the directions. I also always add ice to my bottles so it is probably 50/50 when I drink it. No problems for me, although I like the Citrus better than the lime, but I cannot find that in a powder.

I have only tried Gatorade once and I did not like the taste. Perhaps the wrong flavour or not watered down but I could not do a ride with that taste in my mouth. Powerade is another that I have tried and the red or neutral colour is to my liking but the blue one is disgusting.
If I am just out on a short ride- then I use water but with just a taste of cordial in to take the taste of the plastic bottle away. If I am on a harder or longer ride- then I use an additive called Leppin. (A long chain carbo hydrate mix) There are a variety of flavours and I settled on one I like but That was not available last time out and finished up with Lemon/ pinapple and this is not bad. The one I use is Energy boost and I normally use it at 5 Spoonfulls per litre of water. Just below what is recommended but it give me all the electrolites I need for a ride. However for a gruelling ride- it is 10 spoons per liter, and as I have found out- you mix it well.
You do need a boost of salts and something else on a long or hard ride- but there are many different additives out there. You just have to find the one you like.
Just a warning- Take a second bottle of plain water if you use any of these drinks. Energy drink over the head to cool you down- attracts the Wasps and doesn't help in cuts either.

Yuck! I can't STAND gatorade!
I'm with you, Gatorade is not very good. I have used Gookinaid Hydralyte for a long time, and plan to stick with it. It has almost no sugar, and is rich in minerals and electrolytes, and absorbs into the blood very quickly. I buy it in larger quantities from the website, but you can buy small packets from REI or running stores.

OT, but my wife and I love green coconut meat - almost like custard! Something we look forward to when we go to Mexico. Not wild about the coconut milk/liquid, tho.

I love it when I'm hot and thirsty. It tastes like #$*&!! if I'm not. And it needs to be really cold. I do notice a difference in how I feel if I drink it, along with water, in hot/dry/physically demanding conditions that last more than an hour. Under an hour, plain water's enough.

I chugged a bottle of Cranberry-Orange Gatorade the other morning mid ride. It was great! Nice contrast to the salty taste of my dried sweat :)
Honestly, I like certain flavors, but it has to be very cold and me very hot - great on a golf course, for example. Does a better job than soda (pop), and keeps me awake longer than if I drink beer.
Maybe we should start a beer thread, but judging from the length of the coffee thread a while back, probably best not to.

But aren't the carbs just as important as the electrolytes? Maybe even more so? What's better, Gatorade or gel + water?

I hear you there. When I was in prep school in Florida, Gatorade had just been invented and our coach insisted that all the soccer players drink it. No water was allowed. So I played in the Florida heat without water rather than drink Gatorade.

Having said I do not like gatorade- Use the energy drink of your choice and save the gels for when they are needed- and always Drink water after a gel.
I became a big fan of Gatorade when I used to race 100-mile desert cross-country motorcycle races. Water would sit in my stomach like a rock after such a thorough wringing-out.
I like the flavor of Green Squall Powerade better; but, lately, I'm finding I prefer the lower-cal Powerade Option - -not as syrupy.
In the florida summer a cold Gatorade tastes great. My wife buys the mix and mixes it a little less than full strength. She usually buys the red and the blue. We rode 30 miles this morning and I drank one during the first 10 minutes and then drank 2 waters during the rest of the ride.

Don't like the original flavor but the RAIN flavors are good. Trying to replace Pepsi with g'rade and more H20
I'm going to start to take milkshakes with me, just saying.

I like some of the flavors. The Orange-Strawberry Gatorade AM is good, and I have the Gatorade Frost powder-flavor Glacier Freeze that is good. I use a little less of the powder than they say to mix, but those two flavors I like. I've had some that weren't so great.

I use Gatorade Fruit Punch or Grape, cut 50/50 with water on rides over 15 miles. And I always bring plain water. Actually the water bottle is completely frozen at the start of the ride, but in NC its warm water by the end of the ride.

I'm not all that choosy about the flavor. None of it really tastes that good or that bad to me. I drink it for the carb boost and the electrolytes. Generally, if I drink more than two water bottles I'll want something extra. I don't drink it on rides under about 30 miles or MTB rides under an hour. I usually carry a bottle of water and one of energy drink. On organized, supported rides I usually just carry water and drink the energy drinks at the rest stops. The harder the effort and the more I'm sweating, the more of it I drink.

After riding for three hours the other day, and having consumed only water to that point, I stopped for lunch and had a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes with gravy. Along with drinking three 12 ounce glasses of water. All for just $4.55.
That sure tasted better than Gatorade.

I'm a big fan of Gatorade, as it works for me. As others do, I use the powder and roll my own at a concentration slightly less than specified on the container. I carry two or three small containers of powder along on a good ride, each enough for one water bottle. I down a pint just before getting on the bike for a ride of just about any length.

All-natural lemonade diluted 50% with spring water for me.
At home I mix the lemonade with sparkling water for a lemonade soda!
I like Sam Adams much more. It may not be as good for you, but after a couple, who cares.
I feel the need for HEED. Mixed according to directions, 1 scoop in 24oz. bottle, tastes better and not as hard on the stomach as the Gatorade I used to drink, 1/3rd diluted. You can also get unflavored HEED and mix it with Hammer Gel to concoct your own flavors.
