Southern California - Lake Wolford area road construction

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Holy carp there is major road construction in this area. Does the State or County have a website that shows construction zones? I had to come up that steep side inside those cement retainers with some cars slowing to almost a stop going around as there was only inches. I felt like a friggin sitting duck and that was early on. Can't imagine how bad it was later. Think about all those sober people coming to and from the casinos.
Anyone else ride that area? I won't be doing that ride again for awhile, scary stuff.

...there's been construction on that road for a couple of years now...but not as bad is it sounds like it is now.
There has never been enough shoulder on Lake Wohlford road, so hopefully they're actually making a bike lane!

did you go up Valley Center Road or Lake Wolford Rd?
Lake Wolford Rd. The steep sucker to the West of the lake now has those cement border walls and there is absolutely no room. I could have touched every car that passed! Most slowed but many just hammered it as they went by. I saw other roadies up by the diner and they all kinda looked sheet white after coming up. At least going down you can match speed.

Note to self: Avoid Lake Wohlford Road for a little while.
Any idea what they'd be doing? Are they doing construction, or are the barriers to prevent rockslides from hitting the road?
...meaning: if they're are actually building something or improving the road, it's safe to say the barriers are temporary...if they're for rockslides, the City of Escondido will probably forget about them and they'll be a permanent 'temporary solution'.

ps. The good thing is that a lot of cycling clubs go up thattaway, and I'm sure the City will get a few calls regarding the inhospitable biking condition of that road.
Probably new asphalt since the upper road is all new pavement but HOLY CARP I coulda done without that heart stopper climb.

new asphalt makes for alot faster decent, but only after it breaks in otherwise might be a lil slick.

Do people actually ride up Valley Center? That road looks like a death trap with little shoulder and the center barrier prevents cars from moving over to give room.

Problem is, neither Valley Center Rd nor Lake Wolford Rd are safe at all. :(
Take your pick.

we did the pie ride back in april and the walls were up way back then. whatever they're doing...either it's big or they ran out of money.

Valley Center Rd USED to be safe going up, but they jacked that road up many yrs ago and left it. I never had a prob a Lake Wolford, I used to do repeats on it, but I found a better hill to play on with more room to play on.
IMO, I'd rather deal with whatever on LW then go up the grade an the horrible road conditions of VCR.
Email this guy and ask him what the holdup is. terrence.rayback@sdcounty.ca.gov He's from the county public works CIP.
Good idea on the link. I normally stay at campgrounds up there and use that hill as my hill workout down and back up. Time to find a new one. VCR isn't even safe for a car.
Last year it was so bad I lost one side of a weight dist hitch on my truck from the ruts!

+1. That used to be part of my regular weekend ride before they made the "improvements".
